Most of the good roads we talk here are part of the golden quadilateral. Many roads in these states have been laid recently through NHAI and are of high quality. When the road work is grouped and tendered with a high value(say minimum 100 crores), the quality of the roads are at best. This is because the contractor margins are high and the technical competence of these contractors are good as well.

One of the main things our state governments should do is to club road laying contracts to form a high value and then tender them. This is one of the proposals submitted by a consultancy assigned by central government to streamline the Highway sector a few years back. This proposal should be rotting in the ministry office.

I think its junked intentionally to keep humans away from the winged visitors.
Went down that road couple of weeks back. As if the road is not bad enough, the villagers strew it with their crop for buses to run them over. Talk about being lazy!! Naturally, cars have to get off the road to avoid these crops.

I dont think KA belongs to this category, looking at other states, specially next to PB and HR.

Just take any state highway in KA, except the Bangalore Mysore one, and you will see the pathetic state of the roads in KA.

I'd put KA in the poor category.

You may have a point there, amitoj. Let us look at the current bad roads in KA (excluding NH4 and NH7, where construction work is on):

- Tarikere-Bhadravathi-Shimoga
- Sakleshpur-B C Road
- NH17
- Madikeri-Puttur
- Chitradurga-Hospet
- Hospet-Bellary-AP border
- Chamarajnagar-TN border
- Gundulpet-Bandipur-TN border

Anything else?

Some of the worst roads I have driven through - MP excepting - have been in WB.

Samples:
- Malda-Raiganj-Dalkola
- Madarihat-Toofanganj-AS border (terrible)
- Roads in and around Chalsa (Cooch Behar region)

Apart from road surface-condition, I also take into account the problems with wrong side traffic, too much of bicycle traffic (without lights) at night, poor bypasses, too much of miscellaneous traffic, and even safety issues in Krishnagar-Behrampur-Farakka and Cooch Behar region.

Folks should we not try to keep the GQ out of this discussion and concentrate on the roads with NH numbers.

Recently had been on a trip to Dharmastala with my friends.
Took the Mysore -> Kushalnagar -> Shanivarasanthe -> Kukke Subramanya -> Dharmastala route.

I would say the the NH-48 (Shiradi Ghat section) is the worst road I had ever seen/driven. From Kukke Subramanya to Dharmastala it was like a horror ride (not to mention the road from Shanivarasanthe to Kukke Subramanya). The road was full of craters I would say. It was really in a pathetic condition.

Also, the Shanivarasanthe to Kukke Subramanya road is in a very bad shape. The last 20KMS or so to Kukke Subramanya is non-motorable.

Here are some pics of this road. Many times we had to get down from the car to give directions and to avoid the underbody from hitting the rocks. This road was full of rubble, rocks and pot holes. Our Swift took a lot of beating.

Sir, the roads you are pointing about is NH34 and NH31.
NH34 is probably worst road in the world. Atleast Volvo India would agree. (read here)

Safety is an issue over NH34 from Farraka to Dalkhola.

Right from Barasaat to Dalkhola (400Kms is nothing less than bone crusher and Axle Breaker).

NH31 is bad as well as dangerous.
Offlate NH60 has detoriated.

NH2, NH6, NH117, NH33 and NH31 (Dalkhola - Siliguri) are dream roads.

NH117 has been repaired just a few days ago.
presently NH41 is under repair, hopefully one day it will be 4 Laned too

And more over internal State Highways, though two lane are more or less in good condtion (they are not GQ Standard but good)

Let us not go into city/town roads which are under town municipal/corporation limits.
let us stick to inter-city roads
