Just saw on CNBC-TV18 that Maruti Suzuki will withdraw the M800 from the Euro-IV cities next year. Wait for more similar announcements.

With no offence to m800 fans i would rather say its about time!!!

I wish for a day when manufacturers would withdraw outdated products themselves than wait for govts and policies to force them :)

I think the Alto also has the same engine. Its just the gearbox that's different right? Or is there some difference in the engine as well?

Probably they use a more efficient fuel injection system. Blocks, heads, pistons, etc would be the same.

Padminis still run in Bombay don't they? I don't suppose they are BS2/3 compliant?

No. It means that new cars (not meeting EIV) cannot be registered in E-IV cities once the regulations come into force. I think M-S may think about the new engine families (like in A-star) for the products they plan to sell in E-IV towns. I doubt whether the Omni and Alto engines can be upgraded to EIV specs.

Just watch and wait for many cars to fall by the wayside.

Alto has the basically the same motor but with 16 valves. So either Maurti will also have to lose Alto or Alto might get the a new motor. If the new motor comes in Alto, its rather good news and positive outcome of these norms ( apart from reduced emissions ).
But I think, M800 and Omni still constitute of a good amount of overall sales, so they might come up with some trick, I guess.

But the withdrawal of M800 is a bad thing at any point of time. The car deserves more and may be there are people who cannot afford to go for Alto, but still want a four wheeler, for them its still M800 as their first car.

Agree with you aaggoswami but to an extent . It was one of the top 10 selling cars for all periods till a few months back. It is the 1st choice to 1st time buyers on a budget. It is better that maruti came out with a better one compliant to the new regulations and at a competiton to the Tata Nano. That will be what will enhance the sales of it.

People do not hesitate giving 20-30k more ( 1000 more bucks every month fr 3/5 years). So a price drop to bring it in comparison with the nano will be better. No use getting the same thing back at the same price.

I really think its about time M800 is laid to rest. But in India, anything can be worked out using some jugaad or another.

Having a new engine is always welcome. Maruti has already earned the fortune on M800 sales till date. They better give it latest gen engine that it deserves

This idea never crossed my mind. This has to be Maruti's plan from now. Give Maruti 800 a few cuts here and there to cut costs, plonk in a smaller more efficient motor, and we have a good Nano competitor.
May be the cost effectiveness wont be very high considering the cost of engine, but this move will allow 800 to survive and fight more. May be a two cylinder version from A-star ? Yes it wont be the one with most linear power delivery, neither will be the smoothest, but still allow the 800 to soldier on for long again.

Govt. policies are flawed, Buses/Trucks/Autos, etc. cause all the polution. Efficient cars like 800, etc. do not contribute much.
In any case, Maruti should try to make its old products also new Euro norms complaint.
