Nice!

Now I would actually be thrilled if there was a replacement for the toxic autorickshaws. Those things are lean mean pollution machines!

Which engine ? The first one or the V2 or the V4 ? Also Indica's on the road (in place of padminis) won;t make much of a difference in time saved - both have similar pick up and top speed .

No PS, no AC too I guess - only back seat comfort !

The authorities & Tata seem to have worked together on this deal. Some tax benefits have resulted in such a low price.

Do they get a stripped down basic version?[/quote]

Yup, still 1.6L is dirt cheap, consider that the Nano will cost 1.25L OTR.

Petrol. Taxi drivers prefer CNG to diesel.

Actually, CNG-convert autorickshaws are pretty emission friendly.

This is a very good move by Tata Motors.
Indica is better than Omni, on any given day.

As per the luggage they can always fit a extra luggage carrier on the top. And again I believe the OMNI should be permanently stopped from the production. They should rule out the OMNI option to make a Taxi with considering the safety feature of the passenger.

This makes me want to buy the Indica Taxi and modify it to look like a normal previous generation Indica. This is almost as cheap as a Nano and cheaper than the 800, which engine is it running however ?

I agree, Indica is a far better option than the Omini. It is a far safer car and also has enough power to take on an airconditioner.
Of course one can understand the view of the taxi Drivers, wherein they get a more fuel efficient and more spacious (7 versus 4 passengers in the Indica) option with the Omini.
But then customers come first, and after living with these dilapidated bangers for years its high time a city like Mumbai gets a more 'modern' vehicle rather than go back to more of the same.
Also the Maharashtra govt. will be more interested in favouring local industry i.e Tata, Pune.

And I hope, Nano comes and takes all 3-wheelers off the Indian roads. It truly has the potential to do that. At least, it will be safer, less polluting and will force better road manners compared to Auto-Rickshaws.

Not bad at all...considering that is costs more money to do a 2 tone paint job.

BTW what engine is this? 1.2 or 1.4. Are they going to do an aftermarket CNG conversion?

Might be possible Tata motors might provide with CNG kits as taxi wallahs prefer that anyday. In any way sounds like a good deal.

If this happen then how Bajaj will survive ? How Bajaj's 2 Stroke Auto will add pollution to already highly polluted air ?
Its a same for Bajaj to running 2-S auto. The 2-S bike has been stopped many yrs ago but still Autos are running.
