Smaller and more modern engines are capable of developing comparable or more power than their older high capacity counterparts.
Sure it wil run at higher rpm and will have narrower usable torque bands but they are greener, lighter and generally donot suffer from the drawbacks of older diesels like a non-existent top end.

Reagrding engine life, the modern car is designed to give flawless service for a specific short period.Planned obsoletion its called.Thats why newer engines last a lot less than say our old amby(recently sold) which was 15 years old,had two overhauls, done several lakhs kilometers and was still going strong(Read service blls remain same year after year). Those cars(And Jeeps) are designed to last a lifetime.
Newer cars are designed for a specific service life like 5lakh km.and thats why your service bills start climbing after the initial 4-5 yrs as various parts start failing and need replacement.

Guys this is my first post...comments and corrections will be welcome

i disagree i remember our premier padmini which used to go to the workship every 15 days with some problem or other body started rusting after 2 years but cant say the same about modern cars our sonata was 6 years old when we sold it no problems at all and i am sure i would have lasted another 6 years same for the cielo man just see the maruthi 800s many of them are more than 8 to 9 years old

you are right in one thing.even though vehicles like the ambys last a lifetime that does not mean they are trouble free. Our Amby used to go to the mechanic every month.but they are for minor defects, mostly leaks from everywhere from the brake lines to fuel lines.I had till recently used an M800 1999 model(now handed over to other members of the family). Its still in pretty good shape but im seein the service costs rising and more and more major expensive parts are being replaced as part of the preventive maintenance schedule.

But modern cars are designed for a specific period of troublefree life
The systems and subsystems on the car are optimised to such an extent that every possible gram of extra weight is reduced.

I earn my keep doing CAE Analysis for one of the most quoted auto companies in T-BHP.We simulate the workings of structural parts and optimise them not for infinite life but for a specific no of cycles.

The reason being the fact that all automobile companies are hard pressed to come up with greener vehicles with minuscule amounts of emissions..They say in some states of USofA when 2010standards come into force, the air coming out of the exhaust will actually be cleaner than the air aspirated in!!

The best way to do this is to reduce wastage of fuel in lugging the heavy vehicle itself! also now cars come with all the safety equipments and accessories, how to minimise the weight increase? , By making parts lighter of course.Developing new tech is very expensive and time consuming that it is the last resort, if all else fails.

I can go on about this(I love to be on the giving end of sermons,as u might by now have deduced)

The crux of the matter is modern cars are designed insuch a way that they work perfectly for at most 6-8lakk km,and it works for us users too as not many would use a car longer than that unless for reasons of vintage or attachment.Thats why nothing can beat those jeeps for ruggedness and indestuctibility

the air coming out of the exhaust will actually be cleaner than the air aspirated in!!no need for 02 cylinders just connect the face mask to the car exhaust

That is a very oft seen quote that i flicked from corporate presentations of US Automajors, used primarily for grumbling about the rising development costs. But it has some truth in it.The 2010 regulation in US requires some emissions to be lower than the curent ambient atmospheric levels in some american cities.

mahindra: the ad is cool, but to justify the ad, please launch the 4x4 scorpio.

With that kind of a caption"Mighty Muscular"
I'm swearing off the Scorpio forever! How lame is that! Do they not want any customers with more brains than a neanderthal?
I'd be embarassed to death driving a car with an ad campaign like that.
To think that I used to cringe at the "men are back" campaign from the SX4.
Compared to the new scorpio ad, that was a subtle poem.

If the guy's vehicle is 'mighty muscular' then why does he need two escort bikes in the front and one support car at the back?

Looks like the pictures Parm posted was when these ads where being filmed. See the security detail in the Honda civics behind. Same ones from Param's pictures.

The version thy used in the ad was a 4x4 version in Parm's pictures. So it looks like they do have a 4x4 mhawk version. Just need to make it available to the consumers. It is sad that it is easier to get a 4WD from Tata than from Mahindra, given that Mahindra was the leader in the 4WD market.

mahindra, i quite liked your ad and dont see any problem in your caption too. but again, like the xylo, many 'prospective customers' are cribbing about your ads. so forget the vehicle design & dump your R&D, hire a good ad agency instead. that will help you sell better vehicles. it after all the AD that matters!

Mahindra needs to change their ad agency, what a bunch of idiots! Who uses a caption like "Mighty Muscular" in todays times. Lets not forget the Xylo - awesome as its sales will be - was poorly positioned as a sedan replacement!
