I think they are targeted at the same set of customers. Both these vehicles are softroaders and would appeal to urban users looking for a SUV like high seating position and GC but sedan like driving. I know that XUV has a monocoque construction as opposed to Aria body on frames construction but of them would appeal to the crossover segment.

yes I might just do that.
and yes i am particularly interested in its proportions because I actually want a slightly more compact SUV.
else I might just wait for the XUV AWD AT and buy that when it comes.

I did that comparison for people who may not like to go around in XUV kind of vehicle with that in your face styling. Also the seating is suitable for 5 because with 7 on board there is no place for luggage.ARIA has got so much negative publicity for not being macho enough but its styling is more global than local.

yes i quite agree that we are a "price vs value equation led" market.

and yes I would buy any of these fancy SUV's had they been priced fairly in our country, the way they are abroad.
I just cannot bring myself to pay almost a 100% premium for these here, in comparison to what they cost on the road outside of India.

this XUV pricing certainly bears out my oft repeated views that the top end Scorpio is ridiculously overpriced given what it offers in terms of handling and the fit finish etc.

Not many I guess.
A little more by the Montero I would think. When I saw it in May that was the first comparison that sprung to mind.

thank you
very good info
the spec looks a bit longer than the Scorp and possibly a tad wider.
but the big thing is that the height is reduced significantly.
wonder if it has a luggage bay roller retractable parcel tray/ shelf like the Koleos and the International SUVs.

the silver, gray and green look the best in my opinion, in that order.

As much as that front end is ugly it can be remedied. For now people will be looking for aftermarket grille and bumpers and hopefully by the next facelift Mahindra will have a more classier front, fingers crossed.

Sigh! I am bored with the "jhakaas" (rhymes with jackass no? ) styling that our Indian auto cos bring up. I think the reason why the looks of this new car lack cohesion (and most other Indian designed cars) is that the companies don't deem it fit to hire graduates in arts and design to do the styling and then let the engineers fine tune the lines for aerodynamics.

Does anyone know if M&M has job positions for arts students in its design team?

Re: New Mahindra SUV for 2011 - Pics on Pg. 112 *UPDATE* XUV500 launched at 10.8 lakh

My views about xuv design is not as extreme as other. The "thing" on the rear tailgate, and the fake grills below the headlight are hideous. The grill not great. But the overall design and proportion is ok. Probably the reason that I dont have extreme view is because I did not expect anything good from mahindra design team. So, this comes as a surprise, that this is better that what they have given us till now.

Btw, comparing with Aria, I love the Aria design way more than this.

@badboy-

The Army has been chasing TATA_JLR and M&M, very badly begging almost 2 years for a new vehicle to replace the Gypsy. They have as a last resort started to induct the Scorpio, Safari and the SX4 in non-combat roles.

The rumored vehicles are doing the rounds and the basic requirements of 'single chassis+moving parts (differential+axles etc) and options of diesel and petrol engines' somewhat akin to the Nissan Patrol that did service some 40 years ago.

The stuck on headlights are from the firt gen Scorpio, and are excusable, so the info that you got on the street could well be right.

And like with things about the Army, I could be wrong, terribly so.

Re: New Mahindra SUV for 2011 - Pics on Pg. 112 *UPDATE* XUV500 launched at 10.8 lakh

Just this one launch has had me thinking of the sheer premium some companies have been charging for their products ! Just bring in something which looks like a box, call it an SUV & then charge anything above 10L ! Man, that's plain rip off ! Anyone can shed some light on how much profit will XUV 500 have on the base variant with this price? Or have they launched it with near zero profit and really wanted to capture the market?

Also could anyone tell the difference between

1. "Follow me home" lamps,
2. "lead me to the car lights" and
3. "puddle lamps"?

Is it

1. Head light that glows for some time after the car is switched off
2. lamps on the under side of the OVRM
3. Lamps on the bottom part of the door

I seriously love the mood lighting. Can we change the colors? Or is it going to be red always ? The interiors of this car is something that swept me away since its almost exactly what I wanted in my car - quite some BLING stuff !! Hope I can put down my cash on one in another 6 months time ! Feel bad that Kerala [neither Trivandrum nor Cochin ] is not a part of Tier 1 launch as of now ! And I hope they retain the price for some time after the launch in Tier II cities.

1) You are right.

2) I think it works like this - when you press a certain button on your car's remote, the headlight glows to show you the path towards your car.

3) XUV has puddle lamps as well as entry assist lamp. One is the lamp on the lower side of the ORVM to show you the surface below while entering the car (this comes on when you unlock the car with the remote from outside) & the other is the light inside the cabin, on the door pad (like in safari). this is to show you the surface when you are exiting from the car.
