Is not the car in lien with them and if you stop paying EMIs wont they first attempt to recover the car?

They might attempt to recover the car. But how does that solve the problem.

Also that sours our relationship, since I am a privileged client of the bank.

Update

After 3 months from the last date, today was the scheduled date for the hearing at the District Consumer Forum.

Nothing happened today. Got a fresh date for the next hearing. After 3 months.

Next date - 23rd September 2009.

Usually the bench comprises of 3 judges. I think the main judge has left. There was only one judge today. Hence nothing happened. Only a fresh date.

Possible that there is a vacancy / leave. Too bad. That is how the consumer court system works. Tenure of the judges is limited.

Just a simple math: 16 lakhs on Car+ 4Lakhs on repairs +consumer court, could be one lakh or so+ medicines to keep away the stress.. = A Merce..! YAY
