Err, you err, guys! The 01 is not always reserved for the capital. Andhra Pradesh's capital is Hyderabad, whose no. is AP 09 and AP 10.

Could some one let me know which place is MH40. Now-a-days a lot of ST buses are registered at this RTO! I have seen quite a few private vehicles also (I am not wrong!)

XX-99X-9999

XX = state
99X = type of vehicle AND registration location
9999 = serial number

In West Bengal (for Calcutta)

01 = two wheelers
02 = cars
03 = autos, tempos etc.
04 = commercial vehicles (taxi, buses etc.)

when series ends, it starts with alpahbet = eg. 02B, 04F etc.

For other towns, the rule is same. eg 38 = Asansol cars etc.
