I am once again seeing the black and white checkered test Punto's on the Solapur highway. They were a regular sight here in Pune till about the Punto was launched. Probably the new engine is being tested.

I never understood that statement of the CEO. What does he mean by saying it's not a Fiat preferred engine? The company spent millions of euro's to develop it and then they say it's not preferred by us!

Do we honestly believe they are going to accept that the bigger engine is on it's way within a few months of the car being launched in the market?

The 1.6 MJD and 1.4 T-Jet are on their way. How else are Fiat going to upgrade the cars? I will applaud Fiat if they take the lead and bring the bigger engine's here before Ford brings in the 1.6 Fiesta. In any case, Verna in diesel and City in petrol have more powerful motor's so in a way Fiat is lagging behind in bringing in it's powerful motors here.

For me, a 1.4 T-Jet Punto would be THE car to buy. The 1.3 MJd makes it difficult to stop driving the car, I pity the driver's of the T-Jet / 1.6 MJD!

please, please, please Fiat India, make this happen

Just yesterday I was thinking that this might happen soon, considering this is the same company that had unleashed the Palio 1.6 on unsuspecting car enthusiasts.

That is a lot of detuning. Internationally, 1.6 MJD VGT pumps out 120 horses, whereas FGT pumps out 105 horses.

Come on Amit, its possible see this must have been the thought process

"Hmm Suzuki sells more of our engines than we do, so lets make another engine which Suzuki or others can use & earn money, but we may not necessarily need to use it"

105 Bhp seems too less for a 1.6 VGT, i think it may not be detuned this much. but the torque figure looks juicy!! Just imagine what it would be after petes! Hope they dont tune this engine for 'linear' power delivery too!

29.6kg-m = 290N-m (approx)

That's a whole lot of torque.. 60 more than Verna CRDi if i am not wrong!

My thoughts exactly! I'd originally planned on buying a car - Punto E Pk in the next month, but after not being wow'd by the performance, had put off the decision till early next year in the hopes that a more powerful version will be available by then.

I just read this article New FIAT 1.6 Multijet Under 120g/km where the "eco" conscious strategy adopted by FIAT might also be a factor considered when finalizing engine tune-spec.

I expected it. It the one of the engine options for Linea in turkey. I also believe Fiat may gradually replace 1.3 VGT with this engine. I have a hunch that this engine might be the only diesel option for linea after a while.

makes sense, as this is the same engine released in Turkey recently.
105bhp and 290Nm torque is what Linea wants atleast.
A 120bhp version would have rocked for sure!

Punto should logically get the Linea engine. In time for Punto anniversary in India in Jun'10 i guess.

Punto with this 1.6 MJD would be really good. I was always of the opinion that a Punto with the Getz D engine would be the best package, and the 1.6 MJD certainly brings it close.

Waiting for it eagerly, but I've already got the Getz!!! No new purchases soon.

Excellent news for those looking to buy a new car, but a little disappointing to the existing Linea owners. Perhaps Fiat should delay the 1.6 launch (maybe 1st qtr 2010).

Considering the Cruze and Indigo Vista that are yet to be launched, Linea 1.6 is a far better option in comparison.

Looks like Fiat wants to make sure they keep the number game rolling even in the months of Nov-Dec.
