Team-BHP - i20 To get more Power

As per Autocar India, i20 is going in for more power. Both the Diesel and Petrol Engines are 1.4 ones.

Hyundai is making already expensive car more expensive :Frustrati and the Diesel is just Meagre 74 Bhp, even less than Swift and at a whopping more than lac grand dearer.

Hyundai has been taken by surprise by the success of the i20. The company had originally planned to sell less than 1,000 units in India every month and planned on concentrating on exports for its supermini for which India is the global production base.

“We were expecting orders in the hundreds, not in the thousands. So I am quite surprised with the response to the i20,” said H S Lheem, managing director of Hyundai Motor India.

Buoyed by the response to the i20, Hyundai is now planning on offering more engine options. “We are now working on introducing a 1.4-litre diesel and 1.4-litre petrol for the domestic market,” confirmed Lheem. The 1396cc diesel engine develops 74bhp or 89bhp, but we are likely to get the 74bhp version in interests of fuel economy.

The 1.4-litre petrol develops a healthy 98bhp and will appeal to those who want more power and don’t mind paying for it. We estimate a price increase of Rs 80,000 for the diesel and around Rs 40,000 for the petrol.

These more powerful i20s are expected by the end of the year.

The reviews of the 1.4 petrol in the UK have not been very inspiring with most reviewers curiously preferring the 1.2, but surely 98 bhp has to count for something. Also the diesel motor has been panned for being unrefined and noisy, there is a 89 bhp version and perhaps that's the one Hyundai should launch instead of the weaker 74 bhp one.

However the big question remains pricing, if the figures mentioned are true the Asta versions of petrol 1.4 will be around 7.00 on road, while the diesel becomes 7.45 on road in Mumbai.

I think Hyundai doesn't want to sell too much of i20s in Indian market, and want to keep the 'exclusivity' factor for i20. What else we can tell about this kind of pricing strategy?

FANTASTIC! The i20 desperately needed more power for its standing in the market (in fact, I cried out loud from the rooftops). A definite step in the right direction. However, the other concern raises its ugly head now. The tax benefitted 1.2 is so overpriced that Hyundai, effectively, left simply no room for the larger engines.

Expect some price corrections and discounts.

Power output mentioned by you is wrong for Petrol and half right for Diesel.

+1 to that. I sincerely do hope the correction happens, maybe it has already started with the Getz being discounted. I doubt though how Hyundai is going to make a price correction for such a new model.

Having said that, more power is always welcome :D
