Wow! How do they sustain the business with abysmal numbers like these?

- Maruti’s erstwhile champion – the 800 – is now down to its lowest ever monthly sales report of 2,345 (down 47% YOY and 3.5% MOM). Pull the plug, MUL, or reposition (read = cheaper) to take on the Nano?
2345 is still a good absolute number. But if we apply even sales drop @40%, YOY, it will be 1407 same time next year. That'll probably not even give the economies of scale to support the current price, leave alone a lesser price. But a 20% drop in price NOW i.e. maruti at 1.5 Lacs (instead of 1.87 Lacs), with cost cutting, will probably result in more than doubling current volumes.

Not for the cheapest car (okay, 2nd cheapest now after the Nano) in India, it isn't. The Alto has well & truly taken over the 800's mantle. Even the twice as expensive Swift sells about 3.5 times what the 800 manages.

You know, I was thinking about this. We've all been talking of how Maruti can cut the 800's price and take the fight to the Nano.

Butttttttttttttttttttttttt

That situation weakens the Alto's value proposition. As things stand today, buyers are so obviously willing to pay the couple of thousands more for the Alto (vis a vis the 800). However, if the difference between the 800 and the Alto's price becomes 30 - 40%, it will ruin the Alto's case. Maruti is much too smart to let its bottom line take such a beating.

I have a feeling that eventually, that WILL happen, and the A star will take the alto's place (probably with a smaller three pot - k8 or something like that) , the alto will take the 800's place, and the 800 will compete with the higher priced nanos.

I just say Honda releasing May numbers...

Model wise break-up for May 09: City: 3638; Civic: 223; Accord: 212

City sales have gone up from April...it is quite impressive to see ANHC performing strongly amidst tough competition from Linea. Didn't they sell single CRV?

Honda is normally very quick to release their monthly sales - why not others?

Civic is badly hit from 2 sides, Altis and New Laura Petrol. It will be interesting to see sales figures of both vs Civic.

Accord also seems to have taken a beating from Superb. Does anybody have any info on sales of Toyota and Skoda?

City will also face tough competition if Linea introduces a more powerful diesel engine.

See this link to get an approximate value of Fiat Linea sales this month..

http://www.tata.com/article.aspx?artid=KQv/3SV4l8Y=

"The passenger vehicle business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 16,563 (15,388 Tata + 1,175 Fiat) in the domestic market in May 2009, compared to 19,685 (19,234 Tata + 451 Fiat) in May 2008, and 14,615 (13,410 Tata + 1,205 Fiat) in April 2009. The Indica range reported sales of 10,006, a growth of 3 per cent over May 2008. May is the fourth consecutive growth month for the Indica. The Indigo family recorded sales of 2,832, a 37.6 per cent decline over May 2008. The UV / SUV range accounted for sales of 2,550, a decline of 49 per cent compared to May 2008."

The Fiat sales is 1175 for May 2009 which gives an indication that Linea must be settling in at 1000 cars a month.. Last month Fiat did 1205 cars.. Surprising to see the decline.. We have to get the exact Linea numbers to ascertain...

It would have been better if Linea does close 1.5 to 2k per month.

Regards,
Sathya

Potential Linea customers could also be waiting for the GP to launch before taking a call. I reckon that Linea will settle into the 1200-1300 range in the long run.

City is back in the usual range of 3700-4200 cars per month. Last months dip and the 6000+ sale in March confirm that they have dumped huge numbers with the dealers in the year end to boost the numbers.

4000 +/- is a good number though. Let us wait and see if Fiat launches 1.6 MJD Linea soon and how it impacts the ANHC numbers.

i am not sure if its the power. i think more than anything its the brand name that's keeping people away from it. Linea is a fantastic VFM already.

Yeah, from 1500-1700 units Linea has come down to nearabout 1000 cars mark. It would be a pity if the nos drop to below 1000 mark for such a good car. Is the so called "honeymoon" period over?

Skywalker,
As you said, its not car or price or anything, its the Brand Image and headaches of ownership that people associate with Fiat and are staying away. TATA service centres are not helping too. Already 2 instances of poor works on Linea have come up in the 1st service on our forum. I have got good experiences till now and hope these continue.

Some dealers are outright shameless, theres one near my house too. Whoever you call, my friend has not yet got his body cover for Linea which he was promised. All mails to Mangesh and Fiat went waste. and dealer is just denying the fact that they promised him a body cover.
