The Xylo and Scorpio come from M&M. The Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat are from the same Volkswagen Group.
There exists some similarities between the two pairs of cars, from the same or more or less same manufacturing stables.
The Xylo's powerplant is the old Scorpio's 2.6 L CRDe engine, now sliced down to 2.5 L /112 bhp/ 24kgm. It has lots of leg room for its rear seats and the overall interior space is cavernous as compared to the Scorpio. All Scorpios (but for the M2DI) now come with the 2.2 L /120bhp/ 28.5 kgm, m Hawk engine that are more peppier than the Xylo's engine.
The Skoda Superb in India comes with the old 1968 cc/ 140 bhp/32.6 kgm @ 1750rpm, PD (pump duse) Passat engine, which is a little bit sluggish vis a vis the 1968 cc/ 138 bhp/ 32.6kgm @1750 - 2500rpm, new common rail diesel engine of the Passat. The latter is peppier. The mid range punch in the Superb engine though is more perceptible.Again here the Skoda Superb offers much more rear seat legroom and space vis a vis the Passat.
This is a comparo between just phased out engines, finding place post retirement in its sibling, a newer and just introduced model that offer more interior space.

Things like this on the engine front are quite common. The Logan story is a case in point. In order to build a cheap but spacious 3 box sedan for Eastern Europe, Renault used technologies and drive trains from the Clio which were towards the end point of their Product Life Cycle and had been milked completely.

Good observation Anjan. But, then thats how the manafacturers work, they tend to extract every penny of their R&D cost of every single engine by unique marketing methods like introduce the same in newer models or release them again with some cosmetic changes.

Some other examples which may not be exactly similar to yours:--

Swift Diesel-->Swift Dezire--> Ritz ( same engine as swift?)
i10 Kappa---> i20
Fiesta TDCi---> Ford Ikon TDci

There are many such examples but then dont you think that's quite natural as long as there is a market for such revamped products?

Yup, VW dumps its old gen engines on skoda and they market it as something awesome and sell it in the superb.

Which is why VW is the premium brand in Europe and not skoda.

still the VW has a class of its own. Infact the skoda diesel engines(1.9TDi) brought a revolution in the Indian markets as well

VW has the western attitude and still treats Skoda as a product from the east (Czech).
