I do not recall the initial averages of the Santro. I do remember my Accent in its first tankful barely gave me 8kpl. Today it is 10+ in town and 12-14 on the highway, depending on how much time I spend in three digits.

Precisely. You got a 2kmpl jump which is acceptable. The i10, which is a smaller car we are expecting the FE to jump by 4kmpl atleast!!! Doesn't make sense.

The Kappa is a highly developed engine, so may be it is 'tighter' when new. Given the story on the Manuals there is little reason to expect the Auto to do worse than the Santro Auto! The only fly can be if you use the kick down mode extensively. I always keep the 4-speed mode (i.e. OD in Hyundai parlance) on. I fact in the first 500km or so I had occasion to drive down to Lucknow and got 12+ from the car. This is the only highway trip I have done in the Santro to date. Incidentally, by switching between the 3sp and 4sp modes I have determined that the car does not go into 4th much below 60kph.

All other cars i have owned, including known petrol guzzlers like the Accord AT have given better FEs and these have increased by 20% after first service. Here we are expecting atleast a 60% rise for the i10.

I don't see a substantial increase like you're mentioning Tejas. Understand this, the Peak torque of 9-9.5Kgm in the Santro comes at 2800-3000 rpm whereas peak torque of 10.5 odd kgm in a i10 1.2 AT comes at 4000rpm. Even while driving a manual, you will see the 1.1 engine is peppier in the city because of the torque figures.

In fact if you see the NHC too it has peak torque of 12.5 odd kgm coming as low as 2700 rpm. Hence the CVT's still give excellent figures.

Realistically expect anything between 8-9kmpl. Period.

** EDIT **
@csnanjappa
I have no idea about torque converter for CVT's.

That's still a rise of 3kmpl for a small car and one can't justify the fact that i have to wait for 1500 more kms of driving at 6kmpl. At this rate i will waste nearly 83 litres of fuel.

Just spoke to one my friend , 1.2 Kappa Sportz . He is averaging about 9-10 with AC in city and around 12-14 in highways , he has ran about 7000kms.

A 3kpl increase equates to a 50% jump in FE after running-in. That sounds rather absurd !!

I checked with a colleague who got the i10 Sportz AT.. Its been 2 months since he has been using it, and mostly city driving. He gets 12km/l in city as he claims, and upto 15 on his highway trips.. Just wondering which are the exception cases (6km/l or 12 km/l !!)!

7kmpl! The auto accord would do better! I am wondering if its a problem with some cars, doesn't make any sense an auto hatch gives this kinda mileage. if it is they might as well as put a RIP on the i10/i20 autos.

Though off topic here, no, the CVT does not have a torque converter.

Again lucky bugger. Ask him how he checks FE and to redo it again.

True, my 2000 model accord AT used to give 7.5 with my style of driving. My dad on the the other hand who drives the i10 is the most sedate driver you will ever see.
i20 doesn't have an AT version as yet.

umm whats the kickdown mode?

s there any sports mode like other cars?

why such low economy. plz explain. its very confusing. it must depend on the driving style right?

aren't auto boxes supposed to be simple. you put it in D and drive away. .

Kickdown mode is very simple. if you suddenly want more power while driving, like for example you wanna overtake quickly, you just slam the accelerator down. This will result in the car automatically upshifting one gear to give more power. Similar to how we shift from 4th to 3rd (or accordingly) in manual cars when we need more power.

This feature is there in all automatic cars.

No sports mode though.

There is a OD button which when depressed prevents the car from going into 4th gear (i10 AT has a four speed gearbox + 1 reverse). Useful for multiple overtaking maneuvers or going downhill. (although you can use D1 & 2 for that as well). However, keeping OD button depressed will affect the FE.

Hi Everyone,

My i10 KAPPA ASTA WS AT has recently completed 2000 kms and 2nd servicing done. Getting a Mileage of 8-9 kmpl :-|

Driving conditions:

1. 100% City Driving (Mumbai)
2. 100% AC
3. Most of the driving @ 40-50 kmph
4. No sudden accelerations or braking

Wonder what to do to get it to a respectable 10+ kmpl figure :-S

Sunil
