What is the fuel efficiency of i10 Automatic

I have driven around 188 kms, and seem to get around 9.8 kmpl, even after some spirited driving (100 km plus speed attained twice / 70 kmh 90 degree turns twice). Apart from what sbiswas does, i do switch off at any standstill position over 1 min, and follow the press-n-lift gear-shift-by-throttle strategy.

Driving conditions and styles vary from person to person. I had a santro M/T which used to give me 11km/litre (100% AC) in bangalore city traffic.

I now drive a verna crdi A/T which gives 11 km/litre (100% AC) in city driving.

Some observations on the hyundai auto box.

Shift points are about 20kms, 40 kms, 60kms for the 4 gears.

Gear changes - upshifts and downshifts are usually within +/- 5kms of these shift points.
However, these may vary slightly on loading and driving conditions.

Driving between 0-20 is in 1st gear, 20-40 is in 2nd gear, 40-60 is in 3rd gear with an overdrive gear above 60km/hr.

The lowest rpm for the gear ratio is at lowest speed for that gear.

Driving steadily at speeds of 20-25 kms/hr, 40-45kms/hr, 60-65kms/hour close to the shift points gives the best FE.

Another feature - releasing the throttle and reapplying immediately lowers the rpm for any given speed. This may 'lug' the engine somewhat if the torque generated for the load is inadequate. Usually the autobox pulls the rpm upwards immediately to prevent lugging.

Driving at the lowest rpm and lowest gear ratio for a given speed gives the best FE.

In practise, city driving speeds are in the range of 10-50kms/hour with maximum driving at speeds of 20 - 30kms/hr. This of course may vary from person to person.

In bangalore, avg city driving sppeds as reported in the press are 20-30kms/hr.

Then what does the A/T user do to get the best FE ?

a)Drive steadily in the highest gear permissible in the traffic conditions, (b) avoid crossing shift points frequently, (c) maintain speeds in the lower ends of gear ratios, (d) lowering the rpm for a given speed by releasing and immediately reapplying throttle.

What does that mean in dense city traffic?

Quickly cross 1st gear to reach 20-20kms/hr beyond the shift point, maintain steady speeds in 2nd gear between 20-30kms/hr, avoid speeding up to the next traffic signal if the traffic speed does not permit travelling steadily at 45kms/hr beyond the next shift point, slowing down only upto 20kms/hr above the 1st gear shift point in case of traffic obstructions etc etc.

Is this possible on a long term basis ?
No, it kills the enjoyment of driving with an autobox.

What is the solution ? Each and everyone has to work out what is best for themselves.

So, the thumb rule is - AT's are fun to drive but sacrifice on FE.

And people who buy AT's - if they're so calculative, they'd rather go for a MT.

And this is exactly why Female Drivers and Old people are getting less FE, compared to people who are technically sound.

And my analysis is that spirited driving and sedate driving give low FE in AT's.

@ Avenger : As long as you're not into the habit of flooring it everytime, you couldn't find a better urban runabout than the i10 A/T at this price. The initial concerns over low FE are now a thing of the past IMO, since most of the 5-6 i10 A/T's on the forum are showing a steady and impressive increase in the FE as more mileage is clocked, so it needn't worry you.

I recently got a new i10 AT. Driven about 660kms till now. Have done only 2 tank-ups till now. FE so far: 1st tank-up gave me 10.1 and second 10.7. Have tried to keep the revs at 2000 rpm mark. Driven only within city, with 100% AC on.
But honestly speaking, this is a brilliant car and a boon to drive in city! More detailed report after crossing 1k in odo.

Crossed 750 km on my odo. Last tank gave me a little over 10 within city with 100% AC.

My Car crossed 3500 in 4 months. I consistently get an FE of 8.5-8.7 in Bangalore City with 50% AC. I don't how others are getting above 10 kmpl. I have driven automatic cars for 14 years now and this is my first automatic car in India. I enjoy driving the car in bangalore traffic as this is very less stressful. I follow all the tricks and aspects of good driving habits of an automatic vehicle but I still could not manage to go beyond 8.5 kmpl.

We have a 2007 Santro AT that just completed 18,000KM. It now consistently returns an average FE of 10-11 kmpl in short (less than 5km) city trips with medium traffic and about 15-16 kmpl on the highway. The FE for mixed driving falls somewhere in between. All with 100% AC.

Even in the bumper-to-bumper traffic of Hyderabad during rush hour the car returned 9 kmpl with 100% AC. The traffic here in Visakhapatnam is not as bad as Hyd, but it is catching up fast

For the first 1500KM or so we got a ridiculously low 7 kmpl in Hyd and thought something was wrong with the vehicle. Then it started improving slowly and became consistent at around 4000KM.

One thing you should remember while driving the AT is to switch from D to N or P when idling at traffic lights - keeping your foot on the brake while the AT is on D is not good for FE.

Also, tank up at a honest petrol pump to make sure you are getting your money's worth of fuel - it can do wonders to your car's FE.

After the second service ( with oil and filter change) the mileage has improved to 9.2 from 8-8.5. odo has crossed 4k kms now.

I am consistently getting around 230 kmper 1000Rs , irrespective of which petrol i put.
Here in Bangalore i use very less AC may be 20% of the time .

Shell - 123km for 500Rs
BPCL - 117km for 500Rs
IOCL : 128km for 500Rs

Really effortless driving so far , reading around 5000 in ODO , no rattles as such.

nanjappa - your cars FE figures of over 12 kmpl in bangalore city is very impressive, did you do any magic? I'm very happy with my car's 9 kmpl now. if I get 12 kmpl, then I think i'll buy one more car for my wife with a different color

I always calculate on tank full method and I don't know how to calculae on 500rs method.
