Do we need to change gears in i10 AT, cant' we just put in D and drive.

Can somebody explain the upward shift and downshift, and how should i look for that.

Planning to do a AT test drive and i have never driven one.

Sorry if it's OT here. Since all are AT cars, thought will ask here.

Yes, you can just put in in D and drive. But what they mean when they say 'changing gears' is manipulating the automatic's processor to upshift or downshift by correctly timed pressing/releasing of the throttle.

I have crossed 4000 in odo and getting an average of 8.5Kmpl, complained to the dealer and got it checked but No improvement. The dealer & Service centre team gives diffrent versions of FE ranging from 8 to 14Kmpl in city, have escalated to Hyundai but no positive response yet. Other than FE, very nice car to drive espcially in Bangalore traffic.

Madhukar - it's amazing that you are geeting FE of 13 in Bangalore city. What petrol did you fill - regular or premium? Also, do you travel on the sub urbs of bangalore and with out AC to get this impressive FE?

Sports AT FE update

5700 kms done in my 13 months old i10 sports AT. Latest city FE is 11.18 kmpl and highway FE is 14.66 kmpl (Warmer was ON for 50% of the time in both the cases). Fuel used is IndianOil XtraPremium gasoline.

even one of my mangers was telling that he gets FE around 12 to 13 in Bangalore city for i10. reason quoted by him was that he comes to office very early ( around 7-7.30 ) and leaves by 4 o'clock with sedated driving

That's an impressive mileage black. Please share your driving style and tips.

I am getting only 8.5 in city with cautious driving and car has done about 1500 km now.

That figure was w/o AC. With AC, its around 12-13 kmpl, but I drive half of my kms in a high speed bypass road with 0 gear shifts.
My tips -
Drive steadily
Dont accelerate in a rush
Drive at speeds in between shift points
Switch to neutral at every traffic stop
Switch off your engine at every stop over 20 seconds. (I read in tbhp that 3 minutes of idling=1 km running)
Fill from a good dependable gas station at morning/night (try to avoid middays)
Fill when your tank is 1/2 to 1/4 full.
Use AC intelligently (full AC for 1st 10 minutes, and then 1/2, 1/3 AC for rest of the journey)
Use sunfilm
Roll up windows at speeds over 60

There are other tips which have been discussed in thsi thread.

Your engine is still in running-in phase, so I guess you should really start measuring FE after completing 2000+ kms.

Oh and lastly, I got 11 kmpl for my last tank with incredible amounts of traffic (eg:travelled 22 kms in 2.5 hrs one day)

Enjoy your drive!

They can be easily identified. Just keep an eye on the tacho and speedo. You would see the tacho needle falling everytime you cross a set rpm-speed combo (if you drive sedately with a light foot). For i10 the shift points are around 10-15 (1->2), 35-40(2->3), and 55-60(3->4), all at around 2200 rpm in the tacho THIS IS ONLY WITH STEADY AND MODERATE ACCELERATION - as I have revved till 4000 rpm in 1st gear (feels great I must say, though VERY BAD for FE), and held the 3rd gear till 70 (3500 rpm). As you become acquainted to A/T driving, you shall learn modulating the gear with the gas pedal. I have only driven A/T cars extensively for around 3 years (since I learnt driving), and thus its now easy for me.

I have a i10 Sportz AT that is 11 months old. Great city car - mostly used by my wife and the odo has about 1000 km only on it. Since my wife has been driving regularly only in the last 1 year, she has been getting only 9-10 kmpl. as her style of driving involves more start stop.

I have noticed that if I drive it returns about 11 kmpl - all city driving in Hyderabad with the AC on all the time. I am generally gentle on the pedals.

Not bad for a great running car!
