Hyderabad International Auto Show (HIAS) turned out to be quite a show after all and beat all my expectations.
The preparations began nearly a month back for me,when our own T-Bhpian KKR2kk2 aka Raj posted a thread about the show and pointed the link to the organisers.I lost no time in contacting them and sealing the deal for Deccan Heritage Automobile Association(DHAA) with the Talwars (Organisers) who were talking to other faction (as one of the T-Bhpian called). We finalised 6 Vintage cars and 6 Motorcycles.
Next step was to contact the owners of these classics and convince them to lend their beauties for 3-4 days.It took us 3 weeks to do repeated follow ups and meetings with owners and inspecting the cars, their preparation and progress and on on side coordinating with Talwars on media plans, coordinatuon with HICC.
Meanwhile I had done up my 1961 Lambretta and got a coat of polish and last minute servicing and oil changes and the beauty was ready for a ride to HICC.
15th July: I made a quick sortie with Talwars to HICC to identify the place for DHAA cars and were quite satisfied with out allocated place.I came back home quite happy.
16th July: The ultimate moment had come to bring these vintage cars and bikes to HICC and arrange them in logical order. We started to bring the cars by 1pm to HICC and to our surprise we were not allowed into the HICC through rear service entrance because the carpets were not laid on.Staff at HICC showed their defiance to enter the cars and we had a squabble there and the organisers quickly intervened and ensured that we got in.apparently one of the staff was shown the door for behaving in an unprofessional manner with DHAA.
By 9pm..all our cars and motorcycles has taken place and all the diplay boards, spot lights were all turned on.
DHAA stall was the first to get ready whileother stalls were still putting up their infrastructure.
I came back home by 11pm after a dinner with a close friend and relaxed.
17th July:
Reached HICC by 9am and ensured that all the vintage cars and bikes were polkished and cleaned bu our inhouse chap.
Opp to DHAA stand was New Mars stall , belonging to our favourite non T-BHP freind Prabhu assisted by Suren and Nazim. They had worked hard whole night and their stall was almost ready. Here i have a remark to make.
The next 3 days Nazim,Suren and Arun(joining on Sunday) plonked themselves at New Mars stall helping to the maximum to spread the good word of Prabhu and his fabulous work. This helping attitude of these guys simply melted my heart and showed the camaraderie of T-BHP.Occassionally we met across the stalls for a chit chat and Nazim was active all 3 days with his camera trying to get the best shots and at the same time wiping his sweat off the forehead.
Opening ceremony was a low fanfare with few govt officials making rounds to the stalls and MC explaining the whole info about the cars and accessories.
At the end of the day 1,Novotel hosted a lovely dinner for the few exhibitors and presented to all the owners of the Vintage cars and bikes of DHAA, a lovely momento to cherish. The dinner with cocktails was amazing.
Jan 18th : The second day was a crowd full and all the, possibly everyone trying to get an eye of the super cars.AMG stole the show and Mercedes Benz won the best stall award, followed by Maruti.
There was hobby centre stall which had RC planes and Nitrous cars. This stall was also quite flocked by everyone.
It was reported by organisers that DHAA stall had 80% of viewer rate, which was highest.
I had to pack my bags early that day as i made a plan to see Harry Potter Film with few T-Bhpians.
19th July : Last day of the show and we were warned that the crowd would be humungous.By noon, the DHAA stalled was over crowded and the fences collapsed twice.I talked to the organisers and arranged 2 bouncers at each corner.I myself wanted don that role (courtesy Pandey Ki Rasoi),but restrained as were not the organisers.
The crowd was becoming uncontrollable by 4pm and i was told that a long queue was awaiting outside.
At the end of the day when the show ended, the real task for us was to vacate the vintage cars and bikes at 10pm as HICC wanted the halls for a function next day.
Cadillac refsued to start and it needed a push followed by a Jump start.Triumph Maylower and Sunbeam Talbot refused to fire and we had to leave them at HICC to be taken away the following day.
In the end it was thrilling experiance of 3 days to see people throng on to automobiles and take loads of pics through their cellphones.
DHAA received many accolades and atleast 4 organisations have come forward to hold a Vintage Rally with our cars and motorcycles.
DHAA is planning for the next Rally on August 15th at Lumbini Park.
The only pic i took in the whole show was of my son sitting in the AMG. |
