That diesel engine better be good. It has the potential to make, or break, this car's market run.

With this price band it would be above Toyota Corolla / Honda Civic. For it to make its presence the pricing need to be right.

According to the article, they are targeting the Accord, Superb band. For that the top end diesel needs to compete with lowest end Accord, maybe a little less than that.

If the rumored prices are correct (13.5 lacs to 18lacs ), Chevrolet have their finest snipers aiming not at the competition but at their own two feet. Cruze as we all know is a replacement for the Optra aka Lacetti aka a cheaper option to the Corollas/Civics. Aiming for the likes of Accord will only have the Cruze fall flat on its face.
The two petrols (1.6 & 1.8) struggle when it comes to fuel efficiency, refinement, performance when compared to the Corollas/Civics, forget the Accord. The only powerplant worth mentioning is the 2.2 diesel and if thats closer to 18 lacs, Chevrolet will struggle to compete with the likes of L&K, Jetta, etc..etc...
Chevrolet does not have the brand pull of Toyota, Honda, Skoda etc..in India. Its pretty much the same in Europe as well. Its being considered as a cheaper option to the Koreans and Skodas. But in UK they realise this and have priced the Cruze cheaper than Civic, Corolla/Auris, Focus and even the Hyundai 130. This makes Chevrolet an iteresting option to new car buyers especially on a budget.
In India somehow the strategy has been to launch the car and have excited customers the first month, see sales dropping from the second month and start discounting from the third month.
Hoping with the Cruze they have the pricing and marketing bang on from day one. There are plenty of customers looking for a VFM Diesel option against the Corolla/Civic. Chevrolet have that product, hoping they know what to do with it.

Cruze / GM would surely fall flat if they try to compete with Accord / Camry; for it to be a success they have to price is a shade lower or equivalent to Civic / Corolla Altis.

The car will find its going tough against Accord. Anything more than Rs. 15 lakh for cruze and the car will not sell. Accord is a very strong car, specially in space department. GM will find the going tough against Accord whose prices for base versions are lower than Rs. 19 lakh.

Agreed that diesel engine will give the car an added advantage, but that advantage is not sufficient to ask for such a high price tag.

A good car can be spoiled by poor pricing if its Rs. 19 lakh. I have personally seen this car many times in my city and once I was barely 2 cms away from the OVRM when I was walking into a restaurant. Its not as large or as spacious as Accord ( from the looks and the glance at the interior ). This car will find going tough at high price.

I think car manufacturers are not trying to sell cars in plenty but rake in higher margins selling lesser cars. To them it probably makes sense. Not many cars to care for too.

At 15-18.5L - its a suicide! It would sell less than the Optra (which is actually priced decently).

I knew GM would do something like this ever since this report back in January 2009

In addition to the Chevrolet Mini, GM plans to launch its premium segment car – the Chevrolet Cruz — in the middle of this year which will take on Honda’s Accord and Toyota’s Camry.

This is the report source - GM to launch third small car by year-end

A very small comparison between Accord, Camry, Cruze and Superb. The parameters Length, Width, Height, Wheelbase, Trunk space, Kerb weight and fuel tank capacity are considered.
Cruze data is from UK website, others from ACI.

It's not the Accord but the Laura and Jetta that the Cruze is aiming for.

GM India is trying to chew more than it can swallow. They need to be a cost competitive brand, similar to what they everywhere else in the world. GM India exists in a bubble where they percieve Chevrolet to be a 'premium' brand and they muck up selling reasonably good cars.
