Amtak,

One more thing for TML to do on the Grande is to get a good suspension. Gas Struts based suspension or atleast an independent suspension to all wheels. Leaf spring based suspension currently available on all models of Grande is not a good idea for a premium product. I have even mentioned this to the marketing manager neighbour of mine who works at TML and he kind of noted it down. It seems they are really flustered with the failure of Grande and the not so decent numbers of Vista and are planning to relaunch the Grande during the diwali timeframe

This is the only update that I found for you:

Hot news update on new Sumo Grande | Vicky.in | Indian Automobile Blog | Car Reviews | Bike Reviews | Test Drive Reports | Pictures | Videos

Apart from that I have seen Grande Turbo in person. Looks ugly without body colored bumpers. Primarily targeted at the call center cabbies.

PS: I like the top of the line version. Here's once pic in black for everyone to have a look and drool (You decide)

Front the front, I have no issues and I think it looks fine. My problem is the really thick D pillar and the rear door which makes it look like a van as opposed to an SUV.

Can TATA do something to attach the tire to the rear door? Yes, thick D pillar is a problem.

I think TATA should keep improving the sumo grande irrespective of name. Looks definitely are very important and we have mixed feelings about the looks so far. But IMO here are some of the things that are more important than the looks,

Competition from the scorpio refresh and xylo have worked against the grande to a larger extent. If I can get a top end xylo or a scorpio SLE for Rs.50,000 more than a Grande GX it is easy to go the other way I think.

It would be interesting to know from the owners how they feel about their grande after owning it for more than a year.

I took extensive test drives of Grande , Scorpio and Safari, Grande scored good on all fronts except.

1. Sumo tag.
2. Thick C pillors and reduced visibility of rear wind shiel.
3. Leaf Suspension , This is not a problem if just compared with Sumo or Scorpio but the pricing of Grande to close to Safari and a potential buyer is bound to take back to back TD of Safari and Grande and Grande will be outrightly rejected.
If there was no Safari the ride quality comparison would have been with only Scorpio.

So my rating was Safari > Grande > Scorpio ( for base models )

It is now too late to salvage the brand , All they can do is to modify the rear and do some face lifting and reintroduce with entirely new brand afte a gap of 6 months.
Yes the costs are going to be huge.
Totally agree with amitk26's rating: Safari > Grande > Scorpio
However, Grande's front looks are far way better , masculine and aggressive than that of Safari.
According to me, if Grande is a failure, it is due to:
1) Sumo tag
2) Poor interior quality
3) Leaf suspension

Otherwise the vehicle has great potential to get into the SUV category.
Despite of all the negatives, still I am in very much love the Grande for its road presence and masculine SUV looks!

Re: Why was the Sumo Grande not a hit?

Here, are the spy pics of the new (Sumo) Grande MarkIII, courtesy ICB & OnCars:

Will the Tata Sumo Grande, in Mark III guise drop the Sumo name to become an all new brand? | IndianCarsBikes.in

The interiors appear similar to old one in the pics, but the Sumo badge appears to have been dropped from the name.

Re: Why was the Sumo Grande not a hit?

Wow, at this moment I have mixed feelings. I am so happy and excited to see the SUV(?) coming back to life in latest avtar, like phoenix. This makes my expectations going thru the roof. But at the same time I am afraid too, I hope this is not another job done in hurry like previous time. TATA has track records of both phenomenal improvements and total goof up, hence the feeling.

@cardeep, thanks for the update mate.
