I have always wondered what kind of original documents one should carry in the car in case police stop you. Currently I am carrying everything in original and I feel a little unsafe about it.

Driver's License - This has to be original I guess.
RC Book - Not sure about this, will photocopy pass?
Insurance - Same doubt
Emission Certificate - Original I think.

I know this can vary by state, please shed some light about what it is in your state.

DL and Emission to be orignal the rest of the docs can be photocopied.

Do we have to get the copies attested?

Xerox copies will do.
but the laws vary in different states and the mood of the cops.
most of the times, i get away with a 100Rs Note

DL and PUC have to be original the others can be xerox copied and i dont think the xerox copies have to be attested.

I am sure, you can keep the originals safely at home. Take a coloured photocopy of everything and keep it with you.. You might even get it attested by some special executive magistrate.. just in case..

Heck, i am even carrying a photocopy of my licence with me.. And i don't even remember where i kept my original drivers licence..

Heh Heh..

Emission certificate in original and the rest can be xeroxes...
For DL do a color xerox and get it laminated ...its as good as the original DL

In Chennai, photocopies will do just fine. No need for attestation as well.

PUC certificates are a joke here. I've never been asked for one (even on my 1997 KB125) and those who pay LTT (life time tax) can breathe easy. If you haven't paid LTT, then you need the PUC because the RTO won't accept your annual or balance LTT without the PUC.

I think out of state vehicles need to keep originals.

I always carry my originals in the car. Thought that was the law! However, i think photocopies must be attested for them to be accepted (its another thing if the local pandu decides to accept or reject them...thats the luck of the draw).

I think I am going to take colour copies of all my papers and keep those copies in the car, rest at home in a safe place. Good thing this thread came up.

I generally only have my DL and PUC original in the car...and keep copies of teh RC/TC/Insurance note..
But when I am out of town I take the originals....you never know which check post is gonna ask for papers.....

the photocopies of rc and insurance may be carried but they need to be attested by any gazetted officer...or just goto any rta and get em attested for rs 10/-
btw no color copies needed...

I just carry the Original PUC and driving lic.,rest all - Insurance Policy,Reg. Book are photocopies..not attested..and not had a problem with cops about attestation of xeroxes ever.
I would also advise carry the Tool Kit at all times, and the original Car Manual, with a first aid kit.
Infact, once I remember,I was asked for tool kit by cops..just once ..I don't know whether it's mandatory to carry tool kit..

Thats correct, coz when I was stopped once during a checking in Mumbai & twice in pune, the cops told me the same thing.

actually my friend got fined for that
apperently if you move your hand over laminated original DL then you will feel a bump this what cops DO check
at least in Pune

Do you mean that Rs 100 bill goes as a bribe or your donation towards 'Help the Cops' fund ???
