The Santro is a great city car (minus the pathetic ride quality at rear).
I would prefer Hyundai to keep the Santro going, but it should be priced not more than 3.5 L. There are a lot of people out there who prefer practical, reliable, no-nonsense and cheap city cars and Santro is one of them.

Here's the Pic...

Already sold in Japan through Kia motors.

I think someone from Maruti's stable is going to shoot through the roof.

This Santro looks to be "A Star". All what is there in Sid's description is there the rounded headlamps etc... although the square headlamps must be changed to give a different look from its Maruti counterpart to avoid plagiarism.

They should forget the car that established them in India?

So, are they supposed to keep this one till they get thrown out of India or something like that?

I don't think there's going to be any such issues. Look at it this way. Every car has some common things. It could be a similar alloy design or a similar bumper so now its a similar headlamp. Big deal. If Maruti tries to initiate any legal action, it will be futile. The downside for Hyundai though is that perception matters many times. It appears to be a copy of the A-Star and that may kill sales for the car. Then again, going by the old Sonata, maybe not

If the Kia is the one being launched in India, then it should do very well. I like the looks, although the beige interiors is a put off for me too.

To all the folks who hate the Santro, and feel it should be phased out, I think its a little to early to phase it out. Lots of people love the Santro for the pickup, the build quality and the amazing reliability. In over 4 years of service, she's never left me stranded ever. I'd say the Santro is a great car, although there are the obvious irritants of bad ride quality at the rear, the unstable ride at high speeds because of the tall boy design.

So, perhaps a mid life revamp might not be such a bad idea for an otherwise nice hatch.

Good that the New Santro is coming. Atleast manufacturers are slowly bringing in their new models and retiring their old ones every 4-5 years. This a sign of a maturing market.

Even though the Santro might not sell too much in the cities anymore, they still command quite a bit of fan-following in the rural and semi-urban areas like the 800 and the Alto.

Wikipedia says the Picanto is based on a shortened platform of the Getz. So the new Santro gonna be based on the same mechanicals as the current Santro or is Hyundai gonna discontinue that one ?
And any guesses for the name of this one. I think they should call it the i0.

When we are talking about Hyundai and Kia.. plagiarism isnt an issue.. it will be a great shock to the world if they come up with a car that hasnt been plagiarised.. all their cars are.. their latest model i20 is a copy of European Corsa, Accent was a copy of lancer, sonata of Jaguar, Tuscon of Cayenne, new sonata of accord, Old gets of Optra, Terracan a copy of 90's Pajero and this one as we see of A-star. You know its in their DNA.

I would recommend to scrap this model as the life of the model is long over. IMO, i10 is a better buy than Santro. Just making some cosmetic changes might not do good for the old horse.

I was planning to buy a santro (obviously after a TD with my wife) after she has rejected the Ritz, she didnt like the looks and felt the rear seats cause back pain after a 20 mts test drive. Now, do i need to wait till dec for the new Santro or shall i go ahead and buy the existing one? I am confused.
