New Grand Vitara with more powerful engine

Saw a half page ad in today's Business Standard. The Suzuki Grand Vitara now gets a 2.4 ltr VVT engine with 163.5 Bhp. Prices start from INR 16.95 Lacs (ex showroom, Kolkata).

This is quite a shift from the earlier 2.0 Ltr, 120 Bhp engine. When the current generation GV was launched, I remember Indian Auto Mags cribbing about losing the earlier model's V6 and its abundant power. Maybe its a move to get some power hungry customers into the fray.

2 questions come to mind. First, why not a diesel? Second, will it truly work to attract more customers, or is Maruti answering a question no one asked?
