Petrol Hatch Match: Fiat Punto vs Hyundai I20 vs Suzuki Ritz

There have been quite a few discussions on the diesel hatchbacks. But petrol hatches are not really being discussed. There are enough people whose monthly running is less than 1000km and would opt for the cheaper petrol cars.

Lets have a comparo between the latest and hottest petrol premium-hatches on the block:

Fiat Punto
Hyundai I20
Maruti Ritz

Here's my take:
Performance: Punto > i20 > Ritz
Suspension/Ride: Punto > i20 > Ritz
Drive/handling: Punto > i20 > Ritz
Features/gadgets: Punto > i20 > Ritz
Mileage: Ritz > Punto > i20
sales & service: Ritz > i20 > Punto
Pricing (cheaper): Ritz> Punto > i20
Value For Money: Punto > Ritz > i20
Brand perception: Ritz > i20 > Punto
Looks & Styling: Punto = i20 >> Ritz
Interiors: i20 > Punto = Ritz

Punto seems to be the better car. And it beats others by a handsome margin.

Looking forward to this thread for actual FE figures from owners of all three cars.

When you say performance, are you only considering 0-100kmph timings or even in gear accelarations? Does peformance only mean 'straight line performance'? I think Ritz will be fastest from 0-100kmph due to lower weight as bhp of all three is almost same.

Mileage: Ritz > Punto > i20
Mileage figures should be very interesting. I agree with your observation but then i20 is the only one with a 4 speed A/T so that will dent it's mileage.

PS 1: we are talking about i20 1.4 here right?

PS 2: Why is this thread in the test drives section?

Performance in general. Whether it gives a powerful feel or not (mostly going by bhp and engine capacity).
This comparison is only for manual transmission i20 1.2. No point including an Automatic here: Its way costlier and also low in FE

Yes, this thread should be in "Indian car scene". I posted here by mistake.
@Mods, can you move it to that section?

The Punto 1.4 should be the better of the three. Yes mileage may be a bit low but the resultant pickup and handling should not worry petrol drivers, especially when one is driving around 1000kms a month. Also, the fully loaded punto is way better priced than the i20.
So, 1.4 gets my vote...

hi,

you havent considered the comfort factor (seating comfort) - that an imp point for a car. i have tested both Punto and i20 (not the Ritz). The comfort level in i20 is much better than Punto (both front and rear seat). again, this is subjective and depends on lots of factors (height, weight, etc). I am 5"11

Thanks

Comparing 1.4L engine to a 1.2L? Don't think that's a fair comparison.

However i can make out the purpose of creation of this thread.

First of all, this is an unfair comparison. How can you compare 1.4 with 1.2 ? If you really want to compare, compare Swift 1.3 with Punto 1.4. But as this thread is here, I will post what I feel.

1) Performance: Ritz>Punto>I20.
The ritz 1.2 is quite good, almost as good as Honda units. For its capacity, it is doing a nice job. Punto 1.4 must come with more power.

2) Suspension/Ride: Punto > i20 > Ritz

3) Drive/handling: Punto > i20 > Ritz

4) Features/gadgets: What do you mean by this, can you elaborate ?

5) Mileage: Ritz > I20 > Punto

6) A.S & S. : Ritz > i20 > Punto

7) Pricing (cheaper): Ritz> Punto > i20

8) Value For Money: Ritz > Punto > i20

9) Brand perception: Ritz > i20 > Punto

10) Looks & Styling: Ritz ? I20 > Punto

11) Interiors: i20 > Ritz > Punto.

The purpose of this thread is to help the average buyer choose the best premium-hatch (P), within a reasonable budget.

Please contribute to the thread rather than trying to be guess my intentions .

For the money you are spending on a car, if you're getting a more powerful engine, do you think that's not fair?
This is not an engine comparison thread (it's only one of several criteria). You are free to choose a 1.2 and pay more for it too.

Refer above. Swift is not in contention here (only new kids on the block get tickets).

Of course various parameters play a role and the final package is important. So can you please add Punto 1.2 petrol ? The car will be pathetic in performance ( I am saying this on basis of Power to weight ratio and this does suggest that car will not be giving good performance ) but VFM will be slightly up. But the overall package will be weaker because of not so good engine performance.
Atleast add Punto 1.2 and remove 1.4 Punto and see results. That will a poll more fair than this one.

1.4L 90bhp is THE standard engine on Punto.
And like you said it yourself, abt Punto 1.2:
But the overall package will be weaker because of not so good engine performance
So adding it in the poll will only be of academic interest. It will score a ZERO.

Let's avoid extremes here ... 1.2 Punto (cheaper than the cheapest) and Jazz/i20 Auto (costlier than the costliest)

Dude, i just pointed out that comparing 1.2L and 1.4L performance wise would be unfair. That's it. No need to jump on any conclusions.

And I already know what your intentions are. No guessing business here.

While these are excellent academic exercises, I think that what makes for the right choice is the user profile and expectations from the car. What is best will keep changing in line with these.

So the i20 1.2, Ritz, and the Punto 1.4 are in the same price band?

If yes, then the comparison is fair.. coz its all bout the money !
