Should not matter, since all the i20's sold in Europe also get made in India.

I did a comparison of prices of the Indian i20 and the UK one. All top end versions.

Version__UK Price___Diff*____India price__Diff*
=========================================
1.2________9625________________5.8 L__________
CRDI______10710____11.3%_____7.2 L_____24.1%
1.4AT_____11020____14.4%_____7.7 L_____32.8%

* Compared to the 1.2 version
- All retail prices
- UK Price in pounds
- The 1.2 and CRDI enjoys the small car advantage while the 1.4AT does not.
- UK prices were taken from here: New Hyundai I20 Price - Compare Hyundai I20 Discount Prices
- Indian prices were from here: Advaith Hyundai :: Hyundai i20 :: Pricelist

The 1.2 in India looks priced really well compared to the UK version. While there is a 11% difference between the 1.2 and the diesel prices in the UK, here it is a whopping 24%. When it comes to the AT, it is a whopping 33% compared to 14% in the UK. Well, we must also remember that the 1.4AT here does not enjoy the small car benefits.

So looks like Hyundai has heavily overpriced the i20 CRDI and AT compared to the 1.2. The 1.2 looks good value for money. Those who are thinking of getting the CRDI should give a second look at the 1.2 petrol before proceeding.

Your source for UK prices should have been Hyundai.co.uk than any 3rd party site. As per Hyundai | New Cars | I20 | Prices, 1.4 CRDI 90 PS 5 door is 10052. 10052* 79.3 = 797123.6. Now, I think this price is no way less than 772298 which is price of Sunroof AT Asta (o).

Given this there is still same numbers wrt manual tranny. So I dont see your post has the right numbers for the discussion.

Very true! I never wanted a Hyundai until now!

Another factor in the comparison is that UK's recession is, I believe, deeper than India's.

I can't help thinking that it is a high level of sensitivity to such innocent comment that kick off such wars, terminating intelligent conversation thereafter. And like others think about Indians, we take ourselves far too seriously about things that do not matter all that much in the ultimate scale of things. While not taking seriously what does matter, the value of a single life.

I am sorry, but I need to tell you that you didn't understand what I am comparing here. The exchange rate does not come into picture at all. I am just trying to say that when you compare the price of i20 1.2, they are overcharging for the CRDI and the AT. Because the price difference (as a %)between these models in India and the UK are different, the Indian one (price diff) being on the higher side.

Very much agree with this. Here is my take on what happened at Hyundai India. First they brought in the 1.2, priced it relatively high because they didn't expect to sell much and they had to take care of the exports. The success of the 1.2 even surprised Hyundai. So when the time came to launch the CRDI, they were sure that there would be many takers, but then they still have the exports to take care of. So the strategy is to price it high, so less local demand, but they still would make enough profits via the premium price.

I say, anybody looking for the i20, get the i20 1.2 at the current price when it is still available. I see a price revision coming pretty soon. Very very soon.

The first part is very good analysis of the Hyundai reasoning - the second, we shall see. As a recent buyer of the 1.2, I am human enough to get some perverse satisfaction when prices go up after I have bought something, so I look forward to that, if it happens! As someone who thought Hyundai to be a maker of throwaway stuff, I must admit to being very wrong too, even in the case of the Santro. With the i10 and 20, they have moved into the big leagues and we are fortunate to benefit from the location of their global manufacturing strategy. It makes it the only auto product so far that is available to us, built to one global standard of the company - other than CBUs of course, but those are in much higher price segments. Perhaps the A Star is another, but I suspect that Maruti may be swapping stuff on the export cars, the fit/finish was not convincing to my eyes.

For the benifit of those who are questioning the existence of this thread, the very fact that everyone harps about the i20 being overpriced in other threads justifies the existence of this thread.

That is simply based on the demand for the particular variant, more demand less price and vice versa. I completely agree that they are charging premium on 1.4 AT and CRDi but till the time customer is happy paying some extra premium what prob. they have, to compete the sales targets discounts can be offered and prices can be reduced.

Leaving the conversion out, your basis of discussion itself isnot right. Check the hyundai uk site for the prices and let me know why I am wrong. The rates on that site shows 1.4 CRDI 90 PS 5 door is 10,052 pounds (ex showroom)!

Oh, bad news... another cut-feature built-down-to-price car for India. Shame

Any chance this is the replacement Santro that was mentioned in another thread?

I don't think it's the i20. It may not make sense to remove features from a car whose sales have already exceeded Hyundai's expectations. And anyway, there is the Magna version for those who don't need all the features.

If wishes were horses... ;-))

Which variant has tremendous competition? The 1.2 Petrol

Which variant has competition, but H is already popular of (for immense power and mileage)? The CRDI

Which variant has NO competition? The 1.4 Auto

Is there a connection between this and the pricing?

Dear Dash,

The first part of the sentence is a fact that has been further corroborated by a British National Thad and the second part was written in Sarcasm. My intentions are not to start a brand war or anything like. As rightly pointed out by Sawyer the sign of maturity is what to laugh off and what to take seriously in the greater scheme of things.

Anyways coming to the topic on hand, a major component in pricing of an item is something called "Consumer Surplus" meaning why sell something for rs.5 when people are willing to pay Rs.8 which even though will reduce the number of customers but will result in profit maximisation.
