Micra is an icon so its hard to do a sequel.
Car looks pretty good as a hatch. Its when they make it into a sedan that things get ugly.
Spy pictures featuring the upcoming all-new Nissan Micra have appeared. Unlike in previous sketches this is the real deal. The car will be built on a new platform called the V-platform which is to be used on a number of cars including a small MPV and a compact sedan. Although primarily engineered for challenging roads in developing countries, the platform will be modified for western markets where refinement is emphasised.
According to a report from
Autocar, the platform would be able to handle a car of up to 1,600kg and 199Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque, meaning the biggest current engine possible is the 1.5-litre turbo diesel.
Since weight saving is a major buzzword at the moment these so-called V-cars would use up to 18 percent fewer parts. For example the dashboard is built from 28 bits instead of 56 while the seats cut off 35 parts from the usual 85.
Engines being considered for the platform include a 900cc and a 1.2-litre while most probably sporting turbochargers. Combine lightweight bodies with good torque and you have a recipe for great performance and fuel economy. A new CVT transmission is said to have been engineered which will improve driving smoothness as well.

Nissan to Start Selling Small Car Nissan March/micra in India and export it to Europe from July 2010
Nissan Motor Co. plans to start selling its first small car in India from July and export the vehicle later this year as part of its strategy to make the country a global manufacturing hub, the chief executive of its local unit said Wednesday.
“We are well on track to open the new factory in March. Production will start in May and the first hatchback on the V platform will be sold from July,” Kiminobu Tokuyama, who is also Nissan Motor India’s managing director, told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview.
A small car will likely help Nissan to tap the growing Indian car market, where annual sales are forecast to nearly triple to three million vehicles by 2016.
Small cars, or hatchbacks, comprise nearly two-thirds of total car sales in India. Nissan’s Japanese rival Suzuki Motor Corp. controls more than half of this market.
“We see the Indian market as a growing market and we are very much focused on this market. At this moment, it is the most important market for Nissan after Russia and China,” Mr. Tokuyama said.
Nissan aims to capture a 5.5% share in the Indian car market in the near term, he said, without giving a definite time frame.

Based on V platform (V for versatile), nissan focuses on reduction in both weight and number of components. Micra has been designed primarily for emerging markets.
This platform will help phase out 18 percent component parts from V-cars than Nissan’s previous small cars.
For example, this very platform helps reduce the dashboard components from 56 to just 28. That’s 50 percent reduction in usage which simply means less production costs.

After five years of sitting on the sidelines, selling a handful of X-Trails and Teanas, Nissan is finally getting its act together in India. At the core of Nissan’s hugely ambitious plans is its ‘new global small car’ project which could catapult the company into the thick end of the Indian car market.
The first body style on the V-platform will be a hatchback or the new Micra which was unveiled to journalists, including Autocar India, but no photography was allowed. However from company-released sketches and leaked line-drawings, we have rendered some computer-generated images that reveal a shape that is cute and appealing.
However, the simple, rounded lines lack the design flair of some of the small cars in the Indian market. Unlike the newly launched VW Polo and Chevy Beat which is out to make a style statement, or the futuristic-looking Jazz, Nissan has deliberately given the new Micra a ‘gender-free’ and more functional design that focuses more on interior space, comfort and ease of driving.
Nissan has lowered the windscreen base and instrument panel for better visibility and the dimensions have been optimised for better manoeuverability. In fact, the V-platform has been primarily engineered for comfort on demanding roads in emerging markets such as India.
On Indian roads, the occupants will be cushioned by a long-travel suspension which uses the standard layout of MacPherson struts up front and a twist beam axle at the rear. Nissan is using 14-inch wheels and reasonably high-profile, narrow 165/70-R14 tyres in the interests of ride comfort and low rolling resistance.
The interiors, which haven’t been revealed as yet, have been described as ‘simple but not cheap’. Nissan also promises to offer the most spacious rear seat in their class. Boot space too is expected to be generous and in keeping with the passenger room available.
Fuel efficiency and low weight are among the strengths of the V-platform. The key here is an all-new lightweight and fuel-efficient three-cylinder 1.2-litre engine which has an offset crankshaft and low-friction piston rings for better efficiency. Nissan says it has tuned the engine for driveability and low-end torque to suit the Micra’s urban focus.
Nissan says the new Micra will be nearly 10 percent more fuel efficient than its closest rivals. Tipping the scales at an estimated 970kg, the Micra will be one of the lightest cars in its class and matched only by the smaller Swift.
The Micra will also get a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, the same Renault K9K unit which powers the Logan. Power output is likely to be the same as the Renault but in the substantially lighter Micra the 65bhp engine will feel significantly more powerful and efficient too.
There is no indication of prices but given how big Nissan is betting on the Micra, it’s likely to be pegged head-on against the segment leader, the Suzuki Swift, and so you can expect a price of just under Rs 4 lakh for the base model.

Well the Nissan Micra launched at the Geneva auto show seems packed with features with reverse parking sensors, speed sensitive auto door locks, push button start/stop, touch screen sat nav & audio system, distance to empty indicator, etc. But somehow the design doesn't appeal to me. The interior too feels a little strange. I mean the car can be a re badged Suzuki and i wouldn't notice. (Hey the A star sells re-badged as a Nissan). Maybe it's just me but the features and indicative price seem nice, but it's styling doesn't appeal to me. Anyway lets see what specs make it to the Indian version.
