How I wish the govt imposes such taxes/duties on 2 wheelers! like A Scooty at 1L and a Bajaj Pulsar at 2L. Should keep most of the pubescents/nutjobs off the roads. Indian roads will at once become safer and the air will be a lot cleaner.

A V4 engine, and a commuter car being sold @ 25-26L OTR!!!!

I cannot think why would one dump their hard earned money on this! Better be happy with a Laura / Accord / Superb!

It is a shame that this car is being priced at this level.

I wonder if Toyota does not have even small change to build a assembly line for all its new introductions like Camry, Landcruiser, Prado etc.,

When Merc & BMW can assemble here for small volumes, why cant Toyota? Or do they think that India is a Banana republic with not enough sales potential and therefore worthy of a new assemble line.

Its only due to Camry's pricing that Accord and Superb sales will thrive, otherwise new Camry is a fine car indeed.

They don't want to do that because

"Camry is not a volume product", deputy managing director of TKM, Sandeep Singh, said. It's more of a brand and 'showcasing of technologies' by Toyota.
I wonder what unique technology is there in Camry that's not avaliable in the Accord or Superb. I think this is a smart business move. Toyota will condition us to the 2 million price tag and then start building the car here and still charge that money because 'the Camry is a technologically advanced product.' Either that or Toyota believes that Indian vendors are still not capable of supplying parts to their quality standards. They have gone on record with that a couple of times.

If the Camry is at this price point then where will Lexus be? That irritates me more then the Camry's price tag because it seems like Toyota will make us buy the Lexus IS at E/5/A6 price points.

You are damn right Parm..all credit goes to the govt to put these mid price range not so cheaper vehicles out of our reach.
The Camry Automatic costs 8.5Lacs-on road in Dubai you know that!!

Nope, Indian customers certainly aren't ready to bite. The Camry is currently selling in single or double digits (only 4 in June 2009) while the Accord moves anywhere between 200 - 300 pieces monthly. An older car at a price that's 25 - 30% higher? Toyota better build the Camry here, unless it is satisfied with being the official 5 star hotel taxi of India (EPCG benefits to hotels = Camry for 10 lakhs!).

Forgetting the company, I think the Skoda Laura and the Superb are great VFM.

What toyota need to do is launch lexus in India. Expensive toyota's don't sell due to lack of image - lexus is already reasonably popular in India with the image conscious.

Now if the lexus IS came here with a price of around 30L, it would be a runaway success!
Toyota reliability in a great looking luxurious package

What a limp effort in the name of "facelift"! This is still not going to find buyers.
Price isn't the only sore point, this car loses on the exteriors & interiors front too.

Any bets?

This one too will fail,

CBU cannot work in this segment especially with the Accord and the Superb around.

Nissan too needs to learn, why potter around the the Teana and have close to nil sales.

One of the most boring mid-size (in North America) cars you can buy, and at so high a price. I'd rather walk than drive a Camry. Who cares if it lasts you 20 years, you'd be bored to death by then.

How much would an Accord cost under the EPCG scheme? Or is it restricted to imports only?
