Business Standard New Delhi: Within 10 months of starting production of its KB-series engines, the country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, has rolled out over 100,000 of these units that power the two small cars, A-Star and Ritz.

Riding on the success of this new fuel-efficient technology, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has planned to incorporate KB-series engines in other existing as well as new models.

“The company’s Gurgaon plant has produced over 100,000 KB-series engines, which are installed in the two small cars A-Star and Ritz since its commercial production began in October last year,” a company spokesperson said. When asked about MSI’s future strategy to roll out more KB-series engine cars, the official said, “We have definite plans to gradually introduce this next generation light-weight fuel efficient engine series in other models over a period of next 3-5 years.”

He, however, declined to name the model next in line after A-star and Ritz which will be powered by the KB-series engine. The company produces Bharat Stage-III, Bharat Stage-IV and Euro-V emission norms compliant KB-series engines. It produces two different petrol engines, 1 litre (A-Star) and 1.2 litre (Ritz), from the fully integrated engine manufacturing facility, located at MSI’s Gurgaon plant.

According to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), A-Star gives a mileage of 19.6 km per litre, while Ritz runs 17.7 km for every litre of petrol.

MSI has so far exported over 50,000 units of Euro-V compliant A-Star, sold as Suzuki Alto in Europe. It also supplies A-Star to another Japanese car maker Nissan under a contract manufacturing agreement with Suzuki. Nissan sells the car in Europe as Pixo.

So looks like Maruti's new K series engines are really working wonders for Maruti. This is good news as prospective Maruti Buyers can get these engines across more models soon

Why do you say "soon", when MS thinks it will take them 3-5 years. I'm wondering why they need 3-5 years?

Coz Swift will get the transplant in the next few months. Also the new face lifted Estilo will get the K series engine in the next couple of months. MS feels 3-5 years to get the K-series across most of their models I guess.

Has MARUTI SOLD 100,000 units of Ritz and A-star combined? One shouldn't judge the success of an engine by the number produced, it should be rather judged by number of cars sold with that particular engine/engine family.

I did not know these engines were made for "other then car" use.

I think, it's a lot of export included.

So half of the K Series Engines are just exported in the Euro-V spec A-Star to Europe. Add the Nissan Pixo and I think around 65-70% of the 1 Lakh Engines so far produced have been exported.

What is so great? Earlier it was some xyz engines and now it is the k series.

MSI is not offering the Just engine to customers nor offering same cars with and without k series engines. Just marketing hype

Makes no sense for MUL to announce this. Seems like a hyped marketing initiative. Also, as SLK has rightly mentioned, many of these engine could have been exported.

I took delivery of an Alto Lxi yesterday from Coimbatore. There were 47 cars getting delivered. Most of them were Alto followed by a couple of Ritz, 7 Swift and 2 dezires.

There was not a single A start getting delivered. I doubt if 100,000 KB series have being sold considering only A star and Ritz share the KB series in the Maruti stable.

Should be inclusive of the export numbers.

The K series engine production is ramping up for sure. MUL is shifting all models to the K Series engine as someone has pointed out here.

right. As per the latest july sales report of the company, A-Star has crossed 50K units of exports. Ritz must have touched close to 20k since its launch (May 8000, June 6000, July assuming 6000). The remaining 30K must be from A star domestic sales.
