Hyundai I10 to get 800cc 90bhp 3 cylinder turbocharged mill

Autocar - 800cc turbo for Hyundai i10

Hope that this engine is also available for us as an affordable pocket rocket.

A new 800cc, three-cylinder turbocharged version of the Hyundai i10 supermini will be introduced in the first half of 2010.
Based on the Hyundai i10 Blue CNG concept that was revealed at the 2008 Geneva Show, the new i10 should produce around 90bhp and emit less than 100g/km.
Though the concept ran on compressed natural gas and emitted just 65g/km despite a power output of 97bhp, CNG demand in the UK has always been low, and so the production car will run on standard petrol.
Likely to be named the i10 i-Blue, the new model will coincide with a mild cosmetic facelift of the whole i10 range to boost sales of the already popular Indian-built Korean hatch.
The Hyundai i10 i-Blue will be the most powerful and most expensive i10 model but prices won’t stretch too far over the current range-topping £8300 1.2 Style thanks to low production costs of the all-new engine.
The i10 will be first to benefit from the turbocharged three-pot motor, but expect to see it put to good use in both Hyundai’s and sister company Kia’s future models.

Wow this will be a pocket size rocket for sure. 90BHP from an 800 CC engine. That is great. Dunno if such power is required for Indian conditions that too on an i10. It will be expensive for sure

I doubt they will launch it in India. Even Maruti did not launch the Turbocharged 800/Alto here.

it will be fun to drive the i10 with a 90BHP turbo engine.
Is this engine the 1.2 Kappa engine with one less cylinder?

Maybe they'll name it Epsilon

Great scoop Sid. But like everyone else I'll have my doubts regarding its launch in India.

You can expect it to be priced at 5.5 lacs ex showroom if it's indeed launched here. The 1.2 Kappa is a better deal on paper.

They've already used that name. The old version of the IRDE was called Epsilon.

Take a look at this thread too.

90 bhp from 0.8 litre is vry high state of tune. Considering that this is essentially one cylinder removed from 1086cc ( 67mm bore X 77 mm stroke ) 1.1 motor, the 3 cylinder version will be around 814 cc.
Now 90 bhp from that cubic capacity will equal to around 110 bhp/ltr. This is very high specific output. Suzuki produces 660cc 64 bhp turbo versions in Japan, but have never tried to sell them in India.
Considering the engine's high state of tune, I doubt if its coming to India.

The potential for the CNG iteration of this engine, previously showcased, is ASTOUNDING in India.

Think of it - a 97 BHP machine from the factory that costs <50p per km to run and is low polluting.

In a low CNG demand country like the UK/ US, it's not viable.

But in a high growth CNG economy like India, it's the PERFECT engine for Metro areas. Despite the higher initial cost, people will love a factory CNG car like the i10 Turbo

Too bad Hyundai India will likely never realize this

Even though India might not be the intended market for such an engine, It will be launched by default. i10 is only made in India, and I think Hyundai will be making the engine here rather than import it from Korea which will just push up costs. As per the report although more expensive than the regular 1.2, it wont be a whole lot more. Hoping it will be VFM, especially taking into account it will improve Power & Fuel efficiency.

Whoa!!! It sure is going to be pocket rocket. But I doubt it will have such high state of tune in India especially keeping in mind the FE conscious state of affairs in India.

even if they launch this, they will have warranty issues due to poor fuel quality in India. see very low change for this to make it to India.

Now that's a true hot hatch!
Hyundai can first test the response of the market with a limited edition fitted with this turbo mill.
If good they can launch it here, below 6 lacs of course

Wow,

After 2010 my M-800 would have crossed 3 lac km mark

Might just be more than happy to plonk in this engine

Hyundai, pls launch it ASAP, anyways within a year the engines would make their way to our Bangy scrap yard.
