just now tata announced launching of freelander2 for indian market prices starting from 34,44,000 rupees for base model. that goes out to be 42laks on road after considaring 18% road tax . problem is the nissan x-trail which in uk competes with freelander where both the vehecles have a price range of roughly 22,000 pounds , sells in india at 24lacks on road . then the question arises that , if both the vehecles are separated by just 1000 pounds or so in other markets , how come in india there is a price difference of 18 laks rupees between the two vehecles? both have 2.2 lit engines and same specs . how the difference is possible ? pls advice

That is a very valid point infact when I asked the JLR guys in mumbai about this they did not have a straight answere. I inquired about the Disco3 and was told that the difference is becasue they bring in fully loaded cars as apposed to UK where you can buy the range. Very strange if you ask me, the other thing I could gauge is that even before I could talk serious purchase intent they gave me hint that there could be discount so I reckon if you go to their showroom with all this info and you are aware they will knock down prices aggressively. I don't see much traction for them in india apart from some initial units moveing of the showroom floor as a select lot want these cars. The other reason is they don't want to have to many SKU as service will be an issue which again is odd as they are selling top of the line so anything lower is anyway covered buy sellig the top end! Gimmicky if you ask me, this opens the field to an interesting trend I saw in HK. Manufactures were only bringing in high end cars so local dealers and private individuals started importing cheaper cars by them selves (greys). At first the car companies tried to bully saying warrenty void/such cars will not be service backed then with public pressure they had to yield and now MB honors global warrantee anywhere in the world. So go get that car yourself as long as it is US $ 40K or above

Is it anything to do with homologation?

I think any car that costs above 40,000USD does not need to be homologated.

I'm not sure if they are following this route and therefore have to bring the top-end model.
