is it copied by chinese or is it built under license from Toyota? it might be that toyota sold old dyes etc to this company whn that model was phased out?

I see a slow selling market for this vehicle if it is priced at about the bracket of 3.5Lto 5L or else it is a complete flop show.

Any idea about the dealer network etc?

Going way OT, but thats why the shares of premier ltd. are rocketing on the stock exchanges. Something sure is brewing up. First the talks of Peugeot making a comeback and then this. Maybe they have some manufacturing tie-ups left with PAL. Interesting.

From the Autocar Article:

  • Zotye is supposed to have bought all the parts and tools for the first generation Terios from Daihatsu.
  • Premier will buy cars in Completely Knocked Down (CKD) condition and fit them with the TUD5 motor. The mini-SUV will come with revamped and better quality interiors to India. Zotye will be shipping painted bodies and all the parts.
  • The TUD5 engine, which is already in use in Premier's existing products, has been modified and re-engineered to bring the engine capacity to below 1.5 litres. Its now 1489cc. It also has been turbocharged and now makes 65bhp. When the mini-SUV is out, it will meet the Bharat Stage IV norms. If the BS-IV compliant TUD5 isn't ready in time, Premier will sell the BS-III versions in non BS-IV towns.
  • Premier has an assembly line ready in Chinchwad where its existing products, the Sigma van and the Roadstar pick-up, are being manufactured.
  • Premier's existing dealers will sell the mini-SUV.

Hi All,

Just thought to add something to this list, i drive an Esteem Diesel (2003 Model) with the TUD5 engine.

Its a Gem of an Engine which was crammed into an Esteem and a Zen and a Peugeot as mentioned earlier in this Forum by cooldude1988765.

However it may not be able to pass the current regulation for emission as also the Most of the parts are sources from actual Peugeot company as i have had to source some parts for some major issues, so that engine is reintroduced PAL will need to work painstakingly to import and make spares available which i don't think would be practical at this stage. ( I may be wrong).

I have seen the same baby SUV badged as Perodua Kembara in Malaysia. Perodua is again a Malaysian automobile company. I have driven one of these during my college days [2001] and the quality of ride was nothing great, but felt it was built alright. I mean the door thud feeling, steering response and everything.

There is a huge fan club for this baby SUV in KL and they a website with a lot of off-roading pics as well. kembara.net - Kembara Automotive Club

Last I heard was some thing about Maruti stopped buying TUD5 from Peugeot because of the Engine did not meet B - III emission requirments and thus stopped Zen D and Esteem D. While I could be wrong as well.

Cheers,
Jai

so the chinese copy of the daihatsu it is. Autocar india has an interview of the CMD of premier and has shown the chinese copy version of the daihatsu as the next launch. Is this the beginning of the end? or is it the rise of the phoenix.
what do you guys think?

The SX4 hatch holds potential but will end up being pricy.

The Premier mini suv shown in Autocar is not impressive in todays times. It seems dated and the eingine (old peugeot diesel) is likely to be unrefined in todays times.

I find PAL to be quite clever in the way they deal with investments. They are reportedly spending around 1 crore to start selling the Chinese Daihatsu ripoff.

Thats way lesser than what it costs even to set a dealership up! Granted, they have already got a factory and the other infrastructure, but 1 crore is ridiculous nonetheless! If they somehow manage to sell 1000 cars a month, they`ll make more money(in percentage terms) than anyone has ever made in the auto industry!

On a lighter note, as per the article the CMD of PAL, Mr.Doshi was deciding between Terra and Rio as the name in India. Lack of imagination or what!

Conversation between him and his marketing guy:

D: "Yeh gaadi ka asli naam kya tha?"
AA: "Saar Terios"
D: "Hum kya rakhenge?"
AA: "Saar, ad agency ko appoint karte hai, woh batayenge"
D: "Ad agency ko agar 5 lakh denge toh woh toh Paanch percent of project cost ho jayaga"
AA: "Saar, aap ekdum correct ho, hum Terios hi rakh lete hai"
D:"Nahi, kambakht, usse to copyrightwale hamari jaan le lenge"

and you see where it went from there!

good one evo, but on a serious note the baby suv does not look half as bad, if they can play with the engine it might turn out to be a good buy. Also there is nothing wrong in trying specially if it is costing just a crore.
