Marina sales tell the story of station wagons in India.

Palio badly needs a price drop and new interiors to get back to a few hundreds. I guess its time for retirement . At this rate fiat will sell more fiat 500's per month in the next 6 months.

SX4 was in the shadow of dzire. Verna and fiesta selling more than sx4.

Estilo and A-star are flops compared to other cars from Maruti within their segment.

God only knows what Nissan is doing in India

Market for pickup trucks is increasing. Time for FIAT to stop palio and get the strada. Atleast that will do better.

How did the Xylo sell in the month of Jan 2009? Wasn't it launched sometime in February?

Correct me if I am wrong.

Neat compilation this is.

Maruti dominates the overall top 10 with 5 Models as listed:

1.Alto
2.Wagon-R
3.i10
4.Indica
5.Swift
6.Omni
7.Santro
8.Dzire
9.Bolero
10.Bolero Pick up

Alto merrily sits on top like a wall. unschated even now.

Wagon-R still remains the next choice after the Alto despite the choices and the "Odds" surrounding it- Practicality rules (?)

The highest selling sedan is the DZire, followed by the City and Indigo.

M&M claims Bolero is country's No 1 selling SUV - The numbers say ditto.

After Ritz, A star's number started dropping - A scapegoat to mount the K-Series engine on 4 wheels and a body.

i10 has made a big dent by gaining the 3rd spot with consistent sales between 10-12k units.

Innova outsells the Scorpio and the Xylo - Refinement matters!

Punto numbers take it north every month, and i20 too.

800 numbers continue to drop further - Counting down the end the most adored car.

its not suprising to know that innova is still the segment leader with xylo following closely.

safari sales were good in jan-march but faded off to 3 digit figures eventually.

Alto, Dzire, 5 series & scorpio is the segment leader every month!

Correct me if I am wrong.
These figures are wholesales by manufacturers to the dealers.
So, Xylo wholesales in Jan are possible as it was already in showrooms by 13th January

I have a feeling Lancer and Cedia numbers are somewhat mixed up..
From Jan to Aug, Lancer has increased and Cedia has decreased..?
It might be the other way around.. by the way, who is buying old lancers still.?

And Outlander is still selling 25 a month..? Amazing. I can't see a thing on the Road of Chennai yet.!

Yep Kaspusv, and the details are great, but what is the basis of classification by SIAM??

There have to be some basis, if it is just pricing then we all would remember that Ocatavia starts at 9 L (Rider) and goes to well beyound 15L for (the discontinued L&K & RS versions) so would we classify them seperately.

Just because this is how SIAM has classified it does not make it correct, SIAM too can make major errors.

Any classification must have a logical basis that is uniform across all segments and not be based on perceptions and wims and fancy of the person compiling it (need to clarifiy that am nor referring to you but to the source date itself.)

If linea is with Fiesta, Verna, SX4 and city due to price alone than why not Jazz & 120 Auto / Diesel, why is the shape suddenly mattering so much?

If there is a seperate C & C+ segment based (incorrectly not on length/ space but on price) then why not do the same for the hatch segment as well?

These are just points for debate.

What if the Linea tomorrow is introduced in a sport variant with the 1.6 or bigger engine at a price higher than octavia and close to civic, where would be postion it then, would be split the car into two segments based on price. Hence Price and Engine capacity cannot be the criteria and the international systems of length of cars has to apply as the sole criteria.

I very well agree with the fact that SIAM classification is not up to the mark as on date. But then, that is what the manufacturers are following.

Infct, SIAM already has a proposal for revising the way cars are classified due to its current guidelines. (like nano & smart being placed in same segment).

one point to note here is that the xylo has managed to beat the innova in sales only in march & april, but till now, the xylo is NOT being sold to the taxi market.

that means only "private" xylos are competing with "private" & "taxi" innovas in the above record. once mahindra starts selling xylos in the taxi market, the numbers would increase by a large extent.

a salesman in a toyota showroom once told me that around 40% of the innovas are sold to the taxi market. i feel the xylo will be a bigger hit in the taxi market as it is cheaper.
