Maruti was at one time toying with the idea of launching the Suzuki Jimny. That's a two-door SUV (and really compact, 1.3 litre, with decent 4x4 capability).
They were looking at it as a replacement to the Gypsy. It had power steering, coil spring suspension all round and an AC.
I was desperately waiting for it... but alas... it wasn't to be.
It would make a great city SUV, which can head out to the rough on weekends. Downside - cramped back seat / no bootspace - but if one wants a two-door, who's complaining.

I would still buy one if they launched it.

I really liked the two door Zen, especially the Carbon. Would definitely buy one it if I come across a good one.

I would definitely buy a two door car, provided if it is a sports coupe.

The specifications something like these:

1. a peppy engine between 100 and 120bhp (I feel the the verna's crdi is good option)
2. lenght not exceeding 4 meters.
3. maximum possible wheel base.
4. 2+2 coupe or fastback type of body (rear seats only for kids, if any)
5. 6 speed manual (its fine with 5 speed also)
6. deck lid spoiler.
7. sporty twin silencer.(rectangular looks great similar to skoda's)
8. sporty steering wheel.
9. ofcourse sporty bumpers.
10. side skirts.
11. wheel arches slightly visible.
12. chrome mesh in the front bumper.
13. ofcourse fog lamps.
14. good set of wheels. (preferebly 15")
15. tubeless tyres.
16. decent plastics.
17. Around 8 lakhs price on road.
18. weight of the car not exceeding 900 kgs.
...can be more specifications than these.

Points 1 & 2 --> the car can be eligible for tax benefits. Also makes the car more practical choice for young generation (young at heart)

The nearest car matching some of the above said specificaions is a TOYOTA SERA(though it has a petrol), but i would like it to be a bit wedge shaped rather than the round shape. ( the butterfly doors is an extra)

Is the SRV less than 4 mts??, I think SRV can also be made into a sports coupe.

I would definitely buy one. In fact that was the only car in my mind when I came back to India.

When is the Swift sport coming thru in it's 2 door version?? And Maruti, don't plonk in the 1.3 instead of that raspy 1.6!!!

Since the car buyer's age has come down drastically (upto college kids levels !) I think its a good time for a 2 door sporty cars.

The problem is that Sporty models are just an eyewash here. Just exterior changes/nothing inside, for eg zen carbon, chevy srv etc. they are just repackaged sedans/hatches. Obviously it wont sell... (fiesta sport is fresh in our minds )

I'd say, a swift 2 door sport (the 125Bhp one...), will surely sell...

But again, one needs to define what 'sell' is, obviously the models will have their own niche market... cant expect a 2 door hatch to overtake an alto in terms of sales...

Ah Grande Punto 3 door, where are you?

I definitely would, if:

1) It is a hatchback or a notchback
2) Rear seat has the rear knee-room of say, an Alto at least.
3) It is peppy/sporty enough.
4) It is built solidly enough (lika a Palio or a Getz would be fine with me).
5) It has the boot space of at least a Palio.
6) It is below 7 lakhs (subjective here, depends on trim and engine. I would pay higher for a really sporty engine and a really well done interior trim)

*waits for ported head*

sorry to say this, but the only sporty swit that will come out of maruti will be an overpriced 4-door with graphics and a body kit.

Well, You just need a Palio 2 door!
Won't it be good with a 1.6 engine? And a 5.5L price tag!!!

Yep! I'd love one! The 2 rear doors on mine are just for show anyway :-) Rear seat is rarely used.

Well since all of us are dreaming here's what I would like:

a. Nice swooping classic coupe shape with long bonnet, short rear overhang.
b. Should be RWD.
c. Nice interiors, 4 seats preferred.
d. Good 200+bhp engine could be a high-revving naturally-aspirated one or could be a turbocharged one.

I was so looking forward to buying a 2.7 Tiburon but seems its not going to be launched in India at all

10-15 years ago the car scene was different. Cars were more of a luxury and there was usually 1 car per household which means the car has to be a family hauler plus daily transport. So, 2 door was not a option. The failure of the Sierra is a great example. These days its common to have 2-3 cars in the family and many young people and students have their own car.

In the bike market we have the Karizma, Comet and P180 which are unbashed sporty bikes and every guy who rides one is gets a serious boost in image but nothing like that in car market.

For Example, if Maruti launches a 2 door Swift with a warmed up engine and suspension, do you think it would work in India ??

There're a lot of subtle levels in this choice. If the 2-door came from a conservative manufacturer like Maruti, it will face extra consumer inertia. However if say, Hyundai released their Tiburon intelligently, it would take off quicker. Any 2-doorer from Honda, again smartly marketed will be the most successful of the lot. Toyota -same basket as Maruti.

Maybe. As a second car perhaps ... Something like a 350z .
Buttt .. Nissan would price it like 45 lakhs, going by their Xtrail pricing :/

Yes i would buy one if it handles good and has a peppy engine. Puegeot is damn good at making such cars. These cars make a lot of sense in India for unmarried people or as a second car.

What I think is this car will be able to attract just a few, no matter how good interiors, looks, power or whatever is. It can't reach the mass, it will never be able to register good sales-figures. If we leave out a few enthusiasts then who is interested in a two-door car in India? Zen 2-Door was launched but just 600 units for entire India and who knows how long it took to sell them. Only those can buy it who already has a 4/5-seater in their garage.
