Simple: Irrespective of Diesel VS petrol debate, which sedan will you vote as "the best all rounder" in the upper C segment in:

• looks, outside and inside
• engine, gearbox and performance
• ride, handling and braking
• build quality, fit and finish
• after sales service
• purchase price
• reliability and maintenance costs, both short term and long term
• resale value
• brand perception

The contenders:

• VW jetta 1.6 P, 1.9 PD
• skoda laura 1.8 TSI, 1.9/ 2.0 PD
• Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 VCDi
• toyota corolla 1.8 VVTi
• Honda Civic 1.8 i-vtec

Sonata is not in the list since it competes with camry, accord, superb etc. and people wrongly compare with the lower segment cars. It is Hyundai's elantra that actually competes in this segment.

Cedia hardly sells, so again struck off.

I will pick my choice later, let the debates begin.

a) IMHO, the list is
1) Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 VVTi
2) Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 VCDi
3) Honda Civic
4) VW Jetta
5) Skoda Laura.

b) Altis is average in almost all regards. It gains points somewhere, loses somewhere, but overall the best.
Cruze is above Civic as Civic now seems immature specially the funky design for interiors. GC related issue along with poor bottom end response reduce the marks. Also its too low to specially the rear seat. Not very comfortable for elders.
Cruze comes second because its new, ride and handling are more sorted out than Civic ( read in ACI about ride and handling of Cruze ) and also ahead in comfort.
Jetta is above Laura because of A.S & S. Also VW brand has more value than Skoda. The car loses out because of GC and relatively high cost of maintenance and low number of dealers.
Skoda Laura comes last obviously because of A.S & S. A strong product let down by A.S & S. and low number of dealers.

Laura if the poll is just about the car and not dealer/Skoda etc :)

Skoda Laura,anyday.Corolla the last choice.

I would pick to buy the Corolla above all of the them.

Jetta for me. You get the Euro feel with better ***

I will keep Chevy Cruze out of the list as it is still a speculative product.

2. Toyota Altis
- For
- A very comfortable family sedan
- Class-leading back-seat comfort
- Excellent after-sales service plus moderate TCO
- Most reliable in its class
- Against
- Not really a driver's car
- WOW factor missing
3. VW Jetta
- For
- Build quality and road presence
- Against
- Under-powered and over-priced (plus high TCO)
- Service network still in its infancy
4. Honda Civic
- For
- Designed for impulsive buyers - love at first sight
- Against
- Unjustified pricing - you pay for the looks which is now dated
- GC not suited for Indian city roads
- Seat comforts not at par with its competitors

Jetta for me too.would have probably choosen sonata if it had been in list because of vfm and low cost of ownership......

I would say add Cedia to the List, its sheeer driving pleasure and VFM. Although, re-sale price does go against it. I know it does sell very less but one of the reasons why people dont want civic is that there are too many of them on the road. so u can say Cedia is exclusive stupid:.

From the ones listed above, I would opt for a civic.

The Cruze isn't launched so noone knows the following:

• engine, gearbox and performance
• ride, handling and braking
• build quality, fit and finish
• after sales service
• purchase price
• reliability and maintenance costs, both short term and long term
• resale value
• brand perception

I don't think it's fair to have a poll and include a car which is not launched yet.

Common sidinca, how can you include a not yet launched car in this poll?
Or Is it that you want our offhand impressions?
It was Civic some time back and now I don't feel that any of these worth buying.
I guess we can simply jump to D instead of driving these C's

My vote goes for Honda Civic 1.8 i-vtec.

I am single, so i would be the only driver as well as most of the time alone, so don't care about rear seats. GC be damn. Love the interior and exterior, reliability is synonymous with Honda. Performance is at par with other cars in segment, at higher revs its bloody awesome to drive. the service center at my place is quite good(use to get city serviced) so no issues there. resale value being Honda would be better compared to others - at par with Corolla. Brand perception is as high as cars from other companies.

and last but not least, awesome mod options in after market.

Sid already has mentioned in his list about reliability and maintenance costs as well as after sales service. in that case would you still go for laura?
