Landrover To Lauch Freelander On Sep 22, 2009 EDIT: Now launched

Tata Motors will be launching the Land Rover Freelander 2 in the Indian market tomorrow. The compact crossover SUV is being brought in as a CBU and thus attracts 100% import duty. Pricing of the Freelander 2 is expected to be around Rs. 35 lakhs. The SUV is sold as the LR2 in North America and the Freelander 2 in Europe. Unlike traditional SUVs which use body-on-frame structure, the Freelander 2 uses a unibody structure which it shars with the Ford Mondeo.

Depends on what engines they will offer. I was told it will come with the same 6 pot Tdi engine which powers the Land Rover, in addition to its petrol versions.

Launched. That's a heck of a starting price:

Quote:
Mumbai, September 22, 2009: Land Rover today launched the highly acclaimed Freelander 2 in India. The Freelander 2 joins the acclaimed Discovery 4, the quintessential sports tourer, the Range Rover Sport and the ultimate luxury 4x4, the Range Rover, all of which were launched earlier in India in June this year.

The Freelander 2 has redefined the compact premium 4x4 segment. It delivers outstanding on-road performance as well as class-leading off-road ability, the hallmark of Land Rovers. A dynamic design, purposeful stance, smart and spacious interior, and an abundance of advanced technologies complete the package.

The Freelander 2 is powered by a 2.2 litre common rail turbodiesel engine. The engine is transversely mounted to provide extra space for better crash protection, front end styling and allows a shorter bonnet for more cabin space. Land Rover’s unique Terrain Response® system is standard on the vehicle.

The Freelander 2 boasts an exceptionally strong monocoque body and inner safety cell, with front and rear crumple zones which absorb energy on impact. It received a 5 star rating in the rigorous Euro NCAP tests for Adult Occupant Protection – a first in its class. This, along with Dynamic Technology Systems, Airbags and Command Driving Position complete the all-terrain, all weather package of the Freelander 2.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Rohit Suri, Head, Premier Car Division, Tata Motors, said, “We are encouraged by the response to the Land Rover vehicles in India. The Freelander 2, Land Rover's best-selling model globally, now complements the Land Rover range in the country. As we expand our reach across various cities in India, we will continuously enhance the Land Rover product portfolio and enable more and more customers to experience the benchmark in premium offroading vehicles.”

The Freelander 2 is available in 3 trim levels in India – S, SE and HSE -- with a starting price of Rs. 33.79 lakhs ex- Mumbai. More information on the product is available on the Land Rover India website Land Rover - India :: Home

Just saw a brand new Tonga Green Freelander on Stephens road in Bangalore. Was so impressed with it that I forgot to take some pictures. Very nice and cute. Why can't TATA get the new Defender 90's?

Excellent pricing I feel. Many people are now going to own a Land Rover which was always considered something that only the Ultra Rich Buy !!

I personally think a lot of BMW 3 / Audi A4 buyers will get tempted into owning this Luxury Compact SUV.

Good pricing, good vehicle, good engine, safe too, but probably will continue to have LR unreliablity to some extent on indian conditions at least.

Will likely kill CRV, X-Trail, Montero, X3 plans, Q5, M Class.

Though all these except Montero are high or lower in pricing, this one slots in well enough in between to draw customer from all of them.

That's not a 4X4. Its a glorified all-wheel drive hatchback with retro looks and Blokes engineering.
