I thought the M-series was Euro-IV compliant in the first place. Or there's something else to this story.

They don't need to change the engine to upgrade it to BS-IV. I am sure the current 1.6L unit can be upgraded to BS-IV with minor tuning and modifications. The article makes it sound like there is a new engine coming which will needlessly create excitement.

Well the M series in India in SX4 is without VVTi. This one is expected to have VVTi. I am expecting around 5-6 hp jump, better bottom end grunt and slightly better top end. The mid range is good enough, but again some improvement might be there.

EDIT :
This is somewhat interesting.

Maruti Suzuki stops SX4 production
2009 September 24

Maruti Suzuki has stopped SX4 production. The auto major will relaunch SX4 model in 6-8 weeks. The new Maruti SX4 model will come with BS4 engine, and a change in design.
Maruti Suzuki will launch new van model in October. However, the company has refused to comment on future model strategy. Maruti SX4 currently sells around 1,000 units/month and it competes with Honda City Fiat Linea

Isnt that the whole point of this?

The only engine change that will really set the SX4s sales charts on fire is if they introduce a diesel - specifically the 90 bhp Multijet doing duty in the Linea. If they released the 1.9 Multijet, I'd be surprised.

Since the production is stopped, I expect some major changes to SX4 - a VVT petrol engine, an MJD with VGT Diesel engine, a new honey comb grill, etc.

But I wish they introduce an SX4 hatchback also, to compete with Jazz and i20.

The time period they are asking is a bit high and may be they will launch a diesel too. IIRC, the car will need very little modification for M16A with VVTi to be installed. The car is already sold with this motor internationally and Suzuki has this engine ready. Next is changes that I am expecting to be very very small and cosmetic. But there was a new updated SX4 on sale in US, the changes were a more powerful engine ( J20 IIRC ) and a new bumper. I am expecting the new bumper to be included for India.
I hope they come up with 1.3 DDis with VGT.

EDIT :
^^^^ Those are changes I was talking about.

Yes its going to be the VVT engine. Dont know if its the K series as they call it but seems so. Also the 1.6 DDIS will be introduced.
Wish they introduce the Sports with the 2.0l egine giving out 147bhp!

1) K series with 1.6 ?? I think the bigger K series were expected with new Swift that is currnetly undergoing tests internationally. I think its M16A with VVTi.

2) IIRC, Fiat was delaying technology transfer for 1.6 and 1.9 diesel motors. If Maruti is able to get 1.6 in SX4, others are sure to get a massive blow.

3) The engine will be updated for US markets and put out 4-5 hp more.

Can you mention the source of information for the news of 1.6 DDiS SX4 ?

i would like to like the SX4 a go if and only if it comes with a powerful enough diesel engine. nothing else seems to make the package VFM from my perspective.

Probably why VW and Suzuki are in talks for technology sharing/transfer and stock buyout.

Last month I visited a popular Maruti dealer. My friend wanted to buy DZire and I inquired about the deals for SX4. When I told him that I am waiting for a new SX4, he smiled and told me 'Don't expect any changes till 2010 sir'. He told me that the car will not get K series and the present engine will undergo changes for BSIV. And guess what all the cars have a very very big waiting list! That kept me wondering if Maruti has taken up the BSIV very very seriously and working on all the models? This is very interesting! Why did they wait till last minute and stopping the sale of cars?
