National highway authority of India (NHAI) is going to start a pilot project from Oct 31st for six months to test technology for introducing a common smart card which can be used at all toll gates throughout the country.
The three technologies that would be tested are -- Active, Passive and Infrared.
1) The Active tolling system (tag sends and receives signals) would be tried on the Gurgaon-Jaipur stretch.
2) The Passive system (tag only sends signals) would be tested on the Panipat-Jalandhar stretch.
3) The Infrared (which sends and receives signals and works on the optical fibre network) would be tried on the Surat-Dahisar stretch of NH.
At the end of six months, the results for all the three technologies would be evaluated & a decision on which technology to be adopted will be taken.
