Jeep Cherokee to breakover into India soon !

A Tata-Fiat JV is planning on launching the Jeep Cherokee and other products shortly. I have used both the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee extensively and they are fantastic offroaders.

The Indian enthusiast in time to come will be spoilt for choice ! Rejoice !!

The aricle in ET today mentions other models will follow. I feel Tata-Fiat may exploit its local assembly with export in mind too.

The ET article on this is here ... Jeep Cherokee soon in india - Automobiles-Auto-News By Industry-News-The Economic Times

If they ever launch this, pricing would be crucial. I hope they go the SKD/CKD route instead of CBU.

The article does mention it will come from Tata's Ranjangaon plant, implying a CKD route?

Its really a great news for all the 4WD & JEEP lovers in India like us.

The only question in mind is that is it going to be a direct import (with 110% duty) or Tata is going to assemble it in India ??
110 % duty !!!

Thats a great news...Last time in 96-97 when they were planning to launch it, estimated prices were around 11 lacs(according to AutoMags & Newspaper),I think it would be somewhere around 30 lacs.Sometime back i read somewhere that BVR Subbu led Argentum Motors was mulling over contract production of Chrysler products....

Excellent news DKG! Tata is on a roll and is using all of the industry tieups to its fullest advantage. Though I don't think too many people are going to use the Cherokee for offroading, the SUV has just to much character. Balanced on the road performance and can slug it out when you need it too. I'd driven one from Philly to Boston in December 2008 and had an absolute blast. Chrysler has come a long way indeed.

Some other points:

1. The current gen has been in production for 5 years already, with an all-new GC expected in early-2010. Presumably, Tata will launch that in India?

2. The 3.0 diesel will serve the segment well. Nearly 220 BHP and 500+ NM of torque. I'd say Tata should not bother with the 6 / 8 cylinder petrols at all.

3. I sure as hell hope they don't get the liberty here.

Great news! I always loved the looks of a Grand Cherokee, though I never had the privelege of travelling in one.

A bit OT--What was that movie where the hero's wife is kidnapped by a trucker on a deserted highway, when their Grand Cherokee has a breakdown?

Jeep Cherokee in India!! that's a good move by Tata.I can't imagin how they are going to accommodate all the vehicles in single show room!!.

I wish they price it at 15-17L to get a good market response.

Jeep Cherokee in India is definitely a good news. I hope TATA-FIAT brings in the Wrangler and Rubicon also. Range starting at 15L would be a good bet for the market.

I very well remember that way back in 1993, Jeep were planning to get the Cherokee here in a joint venture with Mahindra. They had even displayed the Cherokee at the Auto Expo '93 at the Mahindra stall. Dont know what happened after that but the whole thing just fizzled out. Tata is on a roll and after JLR this is the next big thing from them. A swanky Jeep showroom soon?
