Petrol will cost less than Rs 18 a litre but for the duties levied by central and state governments, Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said on Tuesday.

Petrol price of Rs 40.49 a litre in Delhi is 57 per cent (Rs 23.09) made up of customs, excise duty and sales tax. Price of petrol without customs duty, excise duty and sales tax components would be Rs 17.40 per litre, he said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Similarly, the Rs 28.45 a litre retail price of diesel comprises of Rs 10.03 (35 per cent) customs duty, excise duty and sales tax component.

"The basic price of petrol and diesel in Delhi exclusive of duties and taxes is Rs 17.40 and Rs 18.42, respectively," he said.

Dude people in Delhi are lucky, in Bangalore I used to pay ~ 47.xx for a litre of petrol! Now in CA I pay 2.6$ for a gallon (around 30 rs for a litre) ....feels good :)

I don't understand this. Earlier I had heard that petrol/diesel prices are heavily subsidised by government because of which they are able to maintain the current rate :confused:

So if it wasn't for the additional taxes on petrol, it would have been CHEAPER than diesel!

Anybody know why the government decided to tax petrol more than diesel? :confused:

there is some entity called "left" in the indian democracy.....which considers diesel as poor man's fuel....so..less levies...

if the left was absent from the scenario...one would see fuel prices at somthing like Rs. 100/l......take an example from the power tariff in delhi where left does not exist...rates increase atleast once an year...and power reliabilty is nill

and i dont see the government letting go the duties on petrol and diesel....H U G E source of revenue...

Hate to say this, but IMHO the fuel prices will go up again soon. The total loss of the Mumbai High oil platform is Rs. 32,000 crores....

Will they absorb the costs or pass it over to the consumers? Even schoolkids can answer this question....

NEW DELHI: State-run refiner Indian Oil Corp is making a profit from retail petrol sales of 3.5-4 rupees per litre, the firm's chief said on Wednesday.

However, it is losing 1.5 rupees per litre on diesel sales, Sarthak Behuria told reporters.

Guys, I was in Europe for a few weeks and the rate of petrol was €1.27 (Rs. 76.2) per litre of petrol and there was a note on the dispenser that €0.83 (Rs. 49.80) was towards taxes.

Ofcourse in return they also get those no-speed-limit (in Germany), no-signals highways to drive on.
