Fiat group switches into profit

MILAN: The Italian industrial group Fiat said on Thursday, it had switched sharply in to profit in the first quarter owing largely to a big reduction of loses at its main auto division.
The overall group, which has a wide range of industrial interests, reported a net profit of 180 mn euros ($ 218.0 mn ) from a loss of 290 mn euros in the first quarter of last year.
The main part of the business is the auto division which reduced a loss of 238 mn euros to a loss of 88 mn euros. The auto division was also boosted by a payment of 419 mn euros from General Motors of the United States. This was the last installment of damages paid by GM for the ending of an industrial alliance between the two groups
