"Infrastructure & other development"?? Did you by any chance meant parks & statues in this particular state's case?

Road tax and roads

Road tax is just a joke. You pay Road Tax nad then pay Toll on roads so called high ways, expressways etc. In Chennai, people have to pay Toll to go to office, if their office is on OMR - the IT corridor. This is ridiculous. You pay Road tax, income tax, sales tax, VAT and so on. But you are entitled to have a decent road to ride your car... a bit OT... you are not even entitled to get potable water...
When all these happen as some one said we will just become a bunch of crooks to avoid tax and all other charges that needs to be paid to Indian govt. to live in this country.

You pay high excise, road tax, high tax on fuel, road fund cess on fuel, tolls, etc.

I think you missed one point - maqbara's for living persons. I only heard that when a person took sanyas he completed all his /her last rites incl. Pind Dan, to symbolically renounce the world.

I wonder how much is actually used for roads, and how much ends up in the big black hole called - The Consolidated Fund of India. Maybe some RTIs will help. Of course these even these will not get information about the 'cuts'.

No, you've got it upside down! The registration is valid for 15 years (from
purchase date). The road tax has to be paid for 5 years at a time (for four-
wheelers). The RC form has "registration valid upto" and "tax paid upto" as
clear line items.

Bikes do have life time tax in WB!

Yes , even my experience with transferring my vehicle from KA to WB left me surprised.

The tax was 15K+ for 5 yrs ( for a 5+ yrs old M-800 with a/c ) . I believe that the tax is 8-9K for a non-a/c M-800 vehicle. There's no depreciation based on age. I paid a penalty of about 500/- for a 3 weeks delay.

Another thing I noticed was the huge transfer charges. I transferred the car to my dad's name and the charges were 1500/- ! In KA the transfer charge is around 150/-. I just don't understand why the govt. should charge 1500 for a change in name in the RC book.

Typical communist mentality - rip off those having cars.

Details of the Loot

As I've reported in my other thread, finally my re-registration ordeal is over.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...on-t-have.html

I did it all on my own. But it took me one full month, and 10 trips (2-4 hours)
to the RTO in all ! I did not know what I was getting into when I started.
Agents had asked for 10k. I saved some 9k as a consolation!

Now it remains to try to get back some of the LTT I paid to the BLR RTO.

Here are the details of the loot:

Total cost of transfer of my car (Baleno LXI, 2005) : Rs. 40.5k (incl. BLR costs)

Of this, Road Tax was 38.2k (for just 5 yrs.)! This includes some 6.4k as
penalty (for about 6 mo. delay in payment from the NOC date). That works
out to be an usurious interest rate of 40% p.a. Good for the WB govt.!

Of this amount, I think the AC tax was some 16k.

The total cost for the bike (about 14 yr. old) was just 2k. Bikes do have
LTT in WB! But I'd have to pay road tax (+ regn. renewal fees + green tax)
again, in about another year or so, when my original registration expires.

(limited)

I guess because of issues like this enterprises don't want to set shop in WB.

May be it has something to do with the majority of Bong mentality in WB who think living without material pleasures is the way to go.

Disclaimer : I'm a bong.

So do the ICE shops sell it along with the equipment?

It looks like WB is still in the dark ages with no connection to reality of the present world.

I do not really know whether after market ICE guys care/know about this. My car has a factory fitted HU, and the showroom sales guy suggested to get the permit to avoid unnecessary hassles (with the L plates on). Cost me extra 1500 over the registration (got valid RTO receipt) and the smart card reads like AUDIO: Y VIDEO: N

I am feeling privileged living in north after reading this thread.

The road tax here in chandigarh is net Rs. 2200 and it is 2% of the vehicle's value in Punjab for lifetime. What more, you can drive in Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi with vehicle registered in any of these states. I am sure that official rule might say otherwise but there are no objections at all. There are thousands of vehicle registered in delhi, Punjab, haryana but plying in Chandigarh and vice- versa too.

And I have traveled North, west and south but roads in Chandigarh are one of the best. Punjab also doesnt lag behind much.

I think there should be an "Indian" rule by which you can travel to anywhere in India when you have a registered vehicle. This is only the parochial thinking of politicians which hinders this.

Really? How did you figure that? I see no difference from other Indians in this
respect!

You can travel anywhere you like - no one shall stop you(I guess the rule is less than 60 days), unless you are taking domicile in that state.

If you do shift residence to another state, then Indian state laws are on the same level as US (and possibly other countries) laws. State registration is mandatory after a certain number of days.

Re: How the WB Govt. loots vehicle owners

I found a news article on TOI pointing to this link. It appears that now you can pay road tax online.

https://vahan.wb.nic.in/wb/

For 900-1400 cc vehicle, one needs to pay 13900+7500 (special tax, for AC) = 21400

After 5 years, you need to pay 9900 + 7500 (if you still keep your AC) = 17400 valid for 5 years.

Compared to other states, arent the rates high and rules absurd?
