Scoop! Sumo Grande Mark II

Expected: December 2010
Engine: 2.2-litre DICOR
Changes: Mirror mounted indicators, new 'DICOR' monogram, interiors tweaked
Scoop! Sumo Grande Mark II-sumo_grande_motoroids.jpg
Tata is desperately trying to get the Sumo Grande to sell well. But all those efforts have been hitting the wall as far as we can see. The carmaker will try to breathe some fresh air once again into the premium MUV by the end of this year. The refreshed Sumo will be christened 'Sumo Grande MKII'. The MKII model will feature mirror mounted turn indicators. The 'Dicor' sticker on the rear quarter panel will be done away with and instead a '2.2 DICOR' monogram will find space over the front wheel arches. The new vehicle will get some tweaks to the interiors as well, though the exact details are not available at the moment.

I could have been better if they have added Airbags and ABS at least in top end.

I don't see much difference in the looks. Until they work on that, i doubt if it will sell. That too in the premium SUV segemnt???

Is it like Amby to Abmy Mark series

What the Sumo Grande needs, is the Complete overhaul of the interiors & plastic quality, the interiors on the current model on sale are pathetic and looks a generation behind of the current crop from the competition.

Are the modifications limited only to the exteriors ?

I think this is not the final version. Looks like a PS job to me. Some information is correct though.

Very true. Just bare the loss and move on. There is no point investing more R&D money on Grande.

ORVM integrated blinkers are welcome addition.

More importantly TATA must think:
Dropping of Sumo tag
Placing Turbo charger as Top Mount from existing bottom mount.
Reduction of Kerb weight within 1700kg
Introducing 4x4 option

Addition of side rub rails with chrome inserts, Inclusion of ABS, Airbag (option), fresh new design Dash , over all interior fit quality and finish improvement along with price correction (reduction) as a combo can bring some momentum.

I don't see any point in this. Book losses and close the project or sell the stock at a reasonable price. One more thing, some tweaked interiors and exteriors and an existing engine plonk takes Dec 2010 ? One full year ? There must be something else even. Or the project is looked after Graduate and Management trainees as a case study.

They could rework it completely and sell it as a "compact SUV" with appropriate price/trim corrections.

What the Sumo needs is a complete makeover. Redesign the slab-like front to look more contoured and classy, incorporate a formal grille instead of the mishmash, add some trim to the body work to make it less brick-like, redesign the interiors completely using high quality material and put in fancy equipment/instrumentation and even with a price increase it will find buyers, not in the mass segment of the Indian auto market, which doesn't appreciate quality, aesthetics and style but i'm sure the car will be looked at by some discerning private buyers.

Maybe they could turn it into a more compact SUV with a jeep like look, offer 4X4 and ABS. Rip out all goodies. Leave room for customization.

Price it around 5-6 Lacs.

A lot of young kids would buy it.

These pathetic guys at Tata Marketing making another lame *** attempt to flog this dead horse.

Looks like the Taxi segment has written this off. Atleast make it attractive to the personal family carrier market by putting in coil springs at back with ABS/Air bags option and making the looks more SUVish. I just cannot stand it from the rear.

Why are Tata's getting off-track with Sumo I fail to understand ? IMHO Grande looks decent , well diffrent people diffrent perceptions . All that they lacked was fit and finish. Otherwise I see Grande as a good product. In one of the topics there was a talk of upgrading engine in Grande. The engine is good enough to pull that weight and much much better than the home grown M&M engines.

Give Grande a grander interior , and see the diffrence in the sales.
