The new Polo is vital to VW if it wants to become #1 in the world. It is a world car. If they don't get it right, it will be five years before they can fix it.

Anyway, we all know what the Polo looks like in other countries. It does not seem to suffer from cost cutting anywhere else! Are we such a pathetic pile of beggars that we don't deserve better?

If we convert Singapore $ to Indian Rs. It will turn out Rs.2126247.00(Conversion rate is 1SGD=33.59INR)
All cars are expensive in Singapore (I was told a Honda City sells for 20 Lacs in Indian rupees) because of heavy customs and various other duties. Further, VW has an agenda in India and I don't they'll price it even close to Jazz, forget higher than Jazz.

Btw, the India TVC is thoroughly disgusting. Brutally contrived and it looks like made by 90-IQ folks, for 70-IQ folks.

Polo launch is expected in January 2010 and that's why they are giving ads heavly.
Source ACI May 2009(page 62/63).

@Raja : don't worry, you can never cross 50 -60 KM in day traffic form 7 Am - 10 PM in chennai .As far as I have absorbed driving in chennai, there is no use of driving more than 60,because you will save only few minutes say 2-3 mintues, because at most of the points you have to brake hard due to traffic or signals.so a steady speed of 50-60 is well enough.

Cars in Singapore are not expensive because of customs but because of restriction to bring limited number of vehicles on road as the space is a luxury they can't afford to waste in island state. So every year they will provide licenses to acquire cars to residents and cost of entitlement of that license is more than 100% of the vehicle, that is why the increase in price. Also every year the number of new cars entering on roads is equal to number of cars retiring.

Add to that the COE (Certificate of entitlement) costs it will really bloat.
The COE allows you to own a car in Singapore, plus the parking, fuel & other levies really kill owning a car in Singapore.

Parking is more like SGD 500 ~ SGD 250 a month in non premium CBD buildings.

What VW would not like too many people to know is their original value proposition of a people's car was given to them by the monster of the millenium, Adolf Hitler. And even more what they would not like anyone else to know or talk about is that their factories made extensive use of Jew forced labour that was fully used before collapsing at which point the trains took them back to the death camps enroute to the last station, the gas chambers.

My guesstimate is the cost would be around 75 -80 crore for today. Considering all edition TOI. This is plus minus the rack rate. Difficult to fathom what cost deal they got though.
nah .... they would have got way better deal than that, advertising is going through very low times, i have got quotations in past 2-3 month which is even 30-40% lower than what we used to pay 2 years back, right now they are willing to do anything if you are giving business to them

In Singapore the cost of the car registration is more than the cost of the car, so that could explain it - the cost includes the cost of registration.

Its not just VW, other German auto and non-auto companies did the same.

Today's Business Standard's "The Strategist" has a story about VW's media campaign that towards the end mentions the interest generated on Team-BHP by the VW campaign... Link here

Wow, shows that Team-BHP is also being actively monitored by traditional media.

This should be an interesting case study for the future. India has trounced the biggest of players with it's ruthless quest for the best in every feature of a car...be it mileage, looks, ICE, gadgets , power at a VALUE price. FIAT, SKODA and MITSUBISHI are whimpering for market space. We are waiting to see how you change the dynamics VW !! Das waiting !!
