Just came back from my morning run and there seemed to be a VW advert on the front of the Bombay TOI. Not the whole front page... one of those irritating partial covers that obstructs the front page. Would have looked for more ads, but its my neighbor's newspaper!

Times of India : Sold out : Now owned by Volkswagen

Just checked the Times of India, there is a GAPINg hole in the main edition of times of India, and a large back page which has the advert.

cheers,
ac

Times of India - Volkswagen Polo Edition

hey guys,

thought ill start a new thread on this one, as i think it deserves a new thread.
todays times of india, has a hole in it, presumably in the shape of a polo, and the back page of the same has a full page advert of the same. Which states the Polo is on sale now.

cheers,
ac

I have never seen such an ad. fantastic it is. VW seems to be very serious about Indian market, moreover with polo.

The missing part of the newspaper is there to remind us of the missing 4th cylinder in VW's puny new engines!

If they are so serious about India-
1. Why did they give us these mediocre 3cylinder engines?
2. How do they plan to sell car in volumes when with so less dealerships?
3. Why dont the dealerships have TD cars or even display cars yet? They dont even have photocopies of brochures or price lists forget about an original brochure.

This is something crazy, but they achieved what they wanted from this. Heard lots of people discussing about POLO in office today.

We know another HOLE story now, hope they do not recover these ad expenditure by making a bigger HOLE in consumers pocket.

OT: Reminds me of "Polo the mint with the hole"
The ad was definitely an eye catcher though.

Giving an ad on just half page on Ascent costs around 5-6 lakhs of rupees that too on the 3rd page of ascent.

Now VW has totally changed the look and feel of the TOI (front page till the end - all editions of India) including the use of dye cutter, I am sure this would be in several crores of rupees.

Now guess, where and how would they recover it?

Yea, I think the ad appeared in all editions of TOI all over India. Clever by a half I must say! VW definitely want to make it big in India. The Polo with its small engine is bound to do wonders. And yes, they are opening up new dealerships like crazy. Lets hope they can walk the talk!

Which is better - to pay some superstar (movie/sport) crores of rupees to endorse a product - or take a day's issue of a daily and go to whole hog?

My vote goes to the latter

The ad was on the top of the supplement to the main paper - and it cleverly highlights all the features. If the top end version with all the goodies is less than 6 lakh, IMHO, it is very much worth it.

BTW, is this the first time we have 15 inch rubber on a hatch??
