It is the Jetta without a boot --- in fact, Golf came first, of course.

Yes, it has always been quite a lot bigger than the Polo, but is still only a mid-sized family car.

They could have done that with the Polo anyways innit? Why bother importing Golfs for that purpose? Something's definitely up at VW India! Would be interesting to see where they position it,maybe between the Polo and the Vento hopefully!

Hmmm... surely it's only the back end of the saloon (sorry... the American terminology doesn't come easily to me!) that is different

Maybe VW might contemplate launching a Golf based sedan india, positioning it between the Vento and the Jetta. They already have an Golf Estate available abroad.

A lot of people don't, especially here, where the hatchback is considered inferior to the saloon, and the Jetta is available, but the Golf is not.

The "Vento", whatever exactly it is going to be, will confuse matters further!

Autocar India:

Volkswagen has christened the Polo saloon the Vento for the Indian market. The Vento, which means wind in both Italian and Portuguese, follows the VW tradition of naming its models after prominent winds.
err, right...

There was a fine golf blowing off the hills early in the day, but I still thought I would go looking for Foxex or Beetles or maybe check out the Polo game. By the time I reached the plains, the Jetta was blowing nicely, and it put me in mind of the Touregs, making their way in the desert ....and so on. Not many winds there!

Scirocco is a wind. I didn't realise until I just looked it up that so is Passat --- so that's a tradition of two. Nor did I realise until just now that there is (in UK at least) a VW Fox --- I think the smaller-than-Polo used to have another name?

I digress wildly. It's a bad habit <Blush> Sorry...

Actually Golf is a wind!

Golf is named after "gulf stream",Jetta after "jet stream"(in german) along with Scirocco,Passat and Bora which are all winds.

I dont know why no one has mentioned this yet. They are testing the drive train and engine for the VW vwnto diesel. I am certain about this and VW has no plans for the golf yet.

Gulf stream isn't a wind, it is an ocean current --- but the thought that the Golf is not named after the game is fascinating and intriguing.

Google define:jetta found only the VW car --- but, of course, it was only responding for English.

I had a feeling you might have been. Not at all sure that Wiki is right about some of this stuff --- but not totally confident that I am either!

Way O.T

, The car smaller than Polo was the Lupo (I guess a reference to Lupine a.k.a Wolf) from Wolfsburg now replaced by the Fox, I guess VW Vulpo would have been too much.

The naming of the Up! concept is a nod to the LUpo.
