50,000 Honda Citys (ANHC) sold in a year

Honda Car India : Press Releases

New Honda City achieves milestone sales
50,000 units sold in a year
( Thursday, November 26, 2009, New Delhi )

New Delhi, 26 November, 2009: The third-generation Honda City today crossed a significant milestone in its journey in the Indian market, selling more than 50,000 units in just 12 months.

The third-generation City was launched in India in September ’08 and the deliveries of the car began towards the end of November’ 08. The Honda City is the largest selling model of Honda Siel Cars India Ltd.(HSCI), and India has emerged as the largest market for the City in the Asian region during this period.

Since its launch in 1998, the Honda City has been a runaway success in the country and has revolutionized the sedan segment both in terms of design and performance and has so far sold more than 2.8 lakh units in the country. The car with its brilliant engine, fuel efficiency and total reliability struck an instant chord with the Indian buyer and quickly became a best seller in the premium car segment.

In September 2008, the third-generation Honda City set new bench marks in Safety, Comfort and a fine balance of performance and fuel economy. Apart from strong & sleek exterior styling, the Honda City is equipped with a 1.5L, 4-cylinder new-generation i-VTEC engine that delivers class leading power of 118PS and also gives an impressive fuel economy of 16.5 km/l, as per ARAI test data.

Honda City is one of the most awarded cars in the country winning more than 30 automotive awards, including the coveted “Indian Car of the Year” (ICOTY) 2009, from a jury comprising the most respected automotive journalists in India.

“We are very pleased with this milestone and would like to thank our customers for their trust & confidence in our product. The Honda City has been a leader in the premium sedan segment for more than a decade now,” says Mr. Masahiro Takedagawa, President & CEO, Honda Siel Cars India. “Across the past three generations, the Honda City has offered great styling, comfort, performance and reliability and delighted more than 2.8 lakh customers in India over the past 11 years”, he added.

Other Companies can learn a thing or two how to sell cars in India. Honda is one company, which studies the market carefully and launch the products. And it also constantly upgrades them from time to time. And backed by good after sales service. No wonder, even if it is the costliest in the segment it outsells every other car.

Good milestone to achieve and is this the fastest 50k for any of the CITY generations ? in which case all the more comendable

Honda's gamble to move the CITY up a segment has proved to be wise despite what many might say about canibalising CIVIC sales.. why not ? as long as the product is profitable does not matter at all - and I am quite sure the CITY is more or equally profitable compared to the CIVIC

Hats off to Honda for pulling off this achievement. In fact, I do really see a flooding of Honda Citys in my office parking lot in the past months. The reputation they have built over the years is really paying off, inspite of competitive models alongside!

Every Honda product used to be a segment leader sometime back. Be it City, Civic, Accord or CR-V.

But now, they are behind targets (and competition) in all other segments. Civic is trailing behind Altis, Jazz is struggling, Accord is behind Superb, and CR-V is really struggling after the price increase!

The ANHC is an excellent drive, without doubt, and the Honda label works wonders. No doubt, the ANHC is selling so much. That too, despite a higher price tag when compared to some competitors.

My cousin picked one up 4 days ago. Amazing car!!!

We drove to the showroom in a 3 month old VW Jetta and i was pretty impressed with the way the ANHC felt.

Plush interiors, loads of shoulder space, butter smooth engine and transmission. The only area which i think can be improved on is the suspension. Its got a good firm feel to it but the rebound settings seem to be a bit off. It felt as if the suspension wasn't able to compress and release quick enough to soak in the undulations.

My OHC has stiffened shocks but it still feels smoother than the ANHC on rough roads.

Indeed a landmark achievement for Honda. Right car, right label and right marketing can still produce brilliant winners.

BTW, anyone has a clue how did ANHC fare against NHC 1 year sales?

Thats a great figure, apart from being priced high it has roosted the sale figures.
This shows we are more inclined towards brand value.

It may not be as good as ANHC purely due to the capacity they had at that time. If I am right, they were not able to meet the demand for NHC and waiting period of 3 months used to be common before they expanded the capacity.

Yes that is a big number and it has done much better than expected. If has kind of broken away from the SX4 competetion for the NHC with the ANHC, and taken on the Linea very well as well.

Infact i felt the Linea would take the fight to the ANHC, but the brand value is simply too high. Also the Jazz has pushed it's customers too towards the ANHC due to it's high pricing.

Shows that people will pay a premium for a great product. I was reading a comparison between the Honda City AT and SX4 VVT AT in this weekends Economic Times and the reviewer is definitely suggesting the City AT. The Honda Engine makes more power with less CC and the AT is 5 Speed as opposed to a dated 4-Speed AT in the SX4. Sure it is about a lakh cheaper that City AT but City AT offers more technology for the price. Despite the VVT engine and AT, SX4 will still remain an also ran waiting for the "Man to be Back" from the Honda Showroom.

ANHC is not perfect but Honda seem to have perfected a formula and focused on the areas that really matter to the potential buyers.
