Car sales post double-digit growth in Nov; Maruti leads

Quote:
Carmakers continued to see double-digit sales growth in November, helped by last year’s low base effect, when car sales had plummeted to its lowest level on negative customer sentiment impacted by the global financial meltdown. Even though November sales dipped from the previous month, car companies are bullish that the double-digit growth will continue for the rest of the fiscal.

Car sales had dipped 19.38% to 83,059 cars in November 2008 over 1.03 lakh cars sold in the same month of November 2007. Auto sales had started to grow from December last year, after the government cut excise duty by 4% on all vehicles under its stimulus package that revived demand and brought sales back on positive charts. This apart, the decline in interest rates helped revive car sales in the past one year, which peaked during the festive months of October, during which 1.6 lakh cars were sold.

Market leader Maruti Suzuki India continued to hold the sales momentum, recording 60% jump in sales to 76,359 cars. The major push came from the fast-growing hatchbacks Alto, WagonR, Estilo, Swift, A-Star and Ritz, which also witnessed 60% growth to 56,005 cars last month. Sales of the company’s erstwhile flagship brand, the M800, also grew 32% to 3,040 cars.

Korean carmaker Hyundai’s domestic sales jumped 93% to 28,162 cars in November compared with the same month last year. The company posted its highest increase in its decade-old operations last month. Hyundai senior vice-president (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena said, “The base effect of lower sales last year has led to a major jump in numbers but the overall economic scenario has changed in the past one year and translated into more footfalls in our showroom.”

Tata Motors’ sales jumped 48% to 18,480 while Fiat’s sales grew six times to 1,965 cars. Utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) saw its sales double to 15,193 units in November. The major push came from SUVs Scorpio, Xylo and Bolero its Sedan Logan continued to get muted response selling 279 cars last month compared with 300 cars in the year-ago month.

General Motors India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of troubled American car maker General Motors, reported its highest jump in sales at 65.27% to 7,118 cars against 4,307 sold in the same month last year. Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) posted a marginal 2% increase in sales to 5,125 cars.

Two-wheeler sales were largely pushed by market leader Hero Honda, which sold 3.81 lakh two-wheelers last month, an increase of 32% over last year. “With the highest ever sales in November, we have crossed 3 million in the current fiscal. We will cross our target of 4 million two-wheelers much before the fiscal closes,” Hero Honda senior VP (marketing & sales) Anil Dua said.

Chennai-based two-wheeler company, TVS Motors, posted a 37% increase to 1.06 lakh two-wheelers. The increase came from higher demand for scooters, sales for which rose 38% to 25,000 units while motorcycle sales marginally declined to 45,080 units in November compared with 45,276 units sold in the same month last year.

Fringe players in the two-wheeler industry like Suzuki Motorcycle India posted a 48% growth in sales in November to 14,745 units while India Yamaha Motor grew 2.12% to 17,055 units last month.

1) The biggest surprise is sales of SX4 and Dzire combined. We will have to wait for a few more months and see the Manza effect. Another similar surprise is Fiat's sales. I expected sales of Linea to come down due to Manza, but that hasn't happened till now.

2) Altis is selling 800+ units consistently, which is very good considering the price range and IIRC, its currently leading its segment. Despite update, Civic is not able to match Altis, and diesel power + petrol power is not sufficient to bring up sales of Laura.

3) Xylo and Scorpio, both are really selling well as is Innova. However, modelwise sales of all the three will be appreciated.

Maruti has the numbers. Nothing seems to be beating them. The next competitor is less than half of Maruti's sales.

Tata is way behind. Something is wrong. With so much variety in their portfolio, TML shoudl introspect as to why they are behind Hundai.

Manza effect is yet to be seen all over. If TML can ensure that the product is nearly bug free, then it will affect many cars and across the segments.

Looking forward to detailed sales for each model. Want to see segment leaders and see where Linea, GP and Manza are headed

no wonder not many manufacturers are offering big December discounts yet. Also there is news on price increase may be early next year. Is it another propaganda my manufacturers?

Fiat sales are continuously going down month over month. They were selling around 2500 cars post Punto launch. Again, it seems FIAT is falling back into low sales scenario. A sales of less than 2000 cars means, around 700-800 cars (Linea) and 1000-1200 cars (Punto). This is definitely not a healthy sign for FIAT

Lower sales of Civic compared to Altis is not entirely for the reason, that Altis gives more for the money.. the followings factors equally result in low sales of Civic:

1) Smart packaging in its sibling ANHC. so, some potential Civic buyers find refuge in ANHC. Altis, on the other hand, has no C segment car from Toyota..

2) Civic is priced higher than Altis (All variants)

3) Altis base version is a favorite amongs taxis/tours/hotel operators and equally to the corporates for its sane (plain jane) design and back seat comfort.. Civic, on the other hand, has no base (E) varaint, and stricly does not sell or is attractive to taxis/tours operaters..

4) The perceived notion of reliability with the Toyota brand name (though, Honda is rated higher for reliability in the consumer report for North America/UK)

So, considering the above factors, Civic doing 500-600 a month is actually not bad, considering the competition from Altis, Cruze, Jetta/Laura..

Huh ? No mention ANHC ? Thats surprising, lemme open the attachment now

Edit 1 : 500 sold more than Palio. Lol.

Edit 2 : Swift is almost double of Ritz.

Edit 3 : Good ol' Omni is going great. Inspite of an update, CRV stays at ZERO !

Edit 4 : Manza + Indigo couldn't match the DZire, even during the month of launch. Thats not very promising.

Edit 5 : Looking at Logan numbers makes me wonder if Meru has stopped expanding

Congratulations Karpusv! Thanks to both of you for this detailed sales list.

1) Estilo 4000+units ? Things have worked out well for Suzuki it seems.

2) i10 puts up a very strong show. 14K+ units. Really very good considering the price. But IMHO, sales of i20 came down by a good 1K units. Looks like some are preferring i10 over i20.

3) Swift is selling now very high. The biggest surprise because I thought that competition from GP and Vista will hit it.

4) Ritz is still selling well, but the overlap this time has hit Suzuki. Nevertheless, its good enough. Cant say bad.

5) Spark was less than 4K units. Considering the alternative fuel option, I thought it can take fight to Santro, but looks like its next to impossible.

6) GP sales 1100+. What gone wrong. IMHO, this is the only car other than Vista to have 3 engine options in that segment ( I am not considering Getz ).

7) Palio sells less and less. Fiat discontinue it gracefully before 0 figure for sales come up.

8) Linea is around 800 units. Hit by Manza ?

9) SX4 sold close of 1900 units. Good when you consider that its the only car other than G3HC to have only one engine option. VVT seems to have helped.

10) G3HC is selling good again, but it sure has take a hit from Manza.

11) Manza, as expected is an instant hit. But is Indigo CS also considered in the sales ? IIRC, Indigo CS is shorter than 4m, so it should be in small car category.

12) Fiesta selling more than Verna. Nice.

13) Laura 330, Octy 279. Cruze effect. Cruze sold 500+ units, but again what is wrong ? Rear seat space or what. Altis is again the biggest seller.

14) Jetta 94. Good, the car is IMHO, priced quite high. Cruze effect again.

15) Logan 279. Octy did similar number. Renault has learnt a good lesson. We are not third world.

16) Xylo has got good sales, but Innova is selling more than even G3HC. I know its diesel, got more variants, but than even families are buying Innova higher versions. Its also quite practical. 4200+ units is surely a great success.

Hi friends,

It is a good job done by the karpusv. Congratulations and wish you a great married life. The sale of Vistas are also very good in deed. Hope the figures are correct from the sources where Karpusv compiled.

HI BHPians,

Over all the auto industry is growing like a balloon. If it grows in this rate, I believe that the streets of Indian towns and cities will be parked with all kinds of cars.

Mercedes-Benz Leading C / E / S? Nice!

Considering the E is only available in top spec, Once the other lower spec models come in things should get really hard for BMW until the F10 comes out in July?

And about the S, Wow that is a gorgeous figure and imagine what the facelift with the new CKD 500 do? Awesome!

If only they give ML figures too?

No wonder why no discounts for Swift even when all cars including Rtz is offered with some discounts.

Finally Nano sells mor than 800. Is production increased?

Ambassador has sold more than 800 numbers. Great for such a old car.

Aveo is again above 400 units.

Innova clear sweep in that segment. More than double the amount of Xylo. Clearly shows japanese strength.

Bit disappointed with i20 sales this month after selling close to 5k units in previous two months.Still it's more than double of Punto + Jazz sales combined.
Swift sales remains as always.Surprisingly I haven't a new Swift owner on TBhp for quite a while now.
Ritz seems like neither a hit nor a flop.
