Thanks, after seeing your post I just made a call to BOSCH to confirm. Yes they started CR dev activity in 2008 itself for Nano.

I think Tata is waiting for the Petrol sales to stabilise and the new plant to gain full operational ability. Its better thay have all this is place rather than launching the car and then struggling with deliveries.

They also need to be careful that there is no media outbreak with another wave of Nano rumours.....'Tata Nano diesel attacks unsuspecting family'

Is FEV also the company which was involved in the development of the MCC-Smart 800CDI engine in early 2000's?
Have a feeling Tata's engine will be a very close cousin of the SMART CDI engine. This engine gives an average of 25kmpl in urban cycle.

Well, if engine manages to cross half the aforementioned mileage, then Tata is sure to create history in India. A 30 kmpl highway mileage at speeds 70kmph is what is expected. Well, let us see.

20/30 - city/highway kmpl. would it be a fair expectation?

Looks like TATA is planning for another launch party!!

Already there are rumours about Late August/Early September launch for ARIA , Magic Iris and Venture. Hopefully Nano-D could also join in.

I hope they price it in 2-3 lakh range staying true to the NANO philosophy and keep the car still affordable.

News of Tata Nano diesel version had been doing rounds sporadically ever since the launch of the vehicle. May be Tata had waited for the Sanand plant to come on stream.

An 800 cc CRDI would hopefully give 25+ mileage, making motoring even more affordable.

48 BHP for a 600 odd kilo kerb weight! The Nano diesel could outrun some 5 lakh rupee hatchbacks. And that's with rear wheel drive

^ If quality is up to the mark, it can eat into the market share of smaller car segments like Alto, Spark, i10 and the Santros. I just disposed off a Petrol Nano yesterday due to Parking issues. 3 months of driving, I know its a very decent car. Waiting to see the diesel version soon!

I think the nano would make an excellent base for a one make racing series, cheap and simple enough for privateers.
Maybe as a rub off the nano will get a sporty (ahem... coff...coff) image as well.

Nano CRDI

Smallest CRDI 800 CC engine in the world after the 1248CC Multijet diesel engine from Fiat.

India's answer to the west it will be a major hit in Asian & African market with high fuel economy on diesel.

It could make matters worse. A lot of Indicab drivers may loan and buy these Nano's. If they drive Indicab's ruthlessly, imaging the Nano. Nano is more simpler when it comes to driving. We might end up seeing a mixture of auto stayle driving and Indicab style driving in cities and would be more dangerous. Its very easy to zip around in the city. Steering is light and anyone can zig zag around in the city. I hope the drive and ride comfort would be the same in Diesel Nano's too. I too am being tempted to go for one now

I bet they would drive their own car sensibly. Most cab drivers have the 'i don't care attitude' just because its not their own car, its the vehicle owner who takes the real depreciation due to accidents and poor maintenance.

Hype! The Smart has a 799cc engine which churns out 54 bhp & 130 Nm, for some time now (read years). And it (SmartforTwo) delivers a fuel efficiency of around 25 kmpl on AutoBahn runs (In city, it's more).
