Tata Nano wins the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) Award

The Tata Nano has won the prestigious Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) award. In its fifth year running and modeled along the lines of the American, European and Japanese Car of the Year, the ICOTY award and Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) award have been instituted by leading automotive magazines in India, in association with JK Tyre, to bring the auto industry in India at par internationally in recognising their efforts.

The awards are an expert and independent judgment of all new cars and motorcycles launched in the calendar year in India. An 11-member specialist jury consisting of senior automobile journalists from leading automobile magazines in India got together to vote for the most impressive car and motorcycle on similar parameters to acclaimed international awards for automotive excellence.

After the jury rounds the Tata Nano emerged as the Indian Car of the Year.

The Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr. P.M. Telang, received the award from the Vice Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre Industries Ltd., Dr. R. P. Singhania, at a ceremony in New Delhi on December 20.

This time there was a close contest for the ICOTY award and after all points were tabulated, it was the Tata Nano with 63 points that emerged the victor. Though several vehicles qualified for the 2010 ICOTY, the ten finalists selected by the jury, besides the Tata Nano, were the

Fiat Linea
Fiat Grande Punto
Maruti Suzuki Ritz
Mahindra Xylo
Skoda Superb

The expert jury members of the 2010 ICOTY included Yogendra Pratap and Vikrant Singh of Auto Bild India, Gautam Sen and Bob Rupani of Auto India, Bijoy Kumar Y and Srinivas Krishnan of Business Standard Motoring, Aspi Bhathena of Car India, Sirish Chandran and Bertand D’souza of Overdrive and Vardhan Kondvikar and Girish Karkera of Top Gear India. All these jury members evaluate and test cars as part of their journalistic work and are known for their analytic skills and professional competence. Once a year they come together to vote for the ICOTY.

Good to see Nano win. This car simply shocked the world, and honestly speaking for what it has achieved is not an easy task. And whatever it be, the Indian flag did make an impact. Tata is partly successful in what they had promised.

Although I am against this car, I like this car winning ICOTY.

I am more happy about the fact that Indian engineers could manage things here for most of the things. This is what I deeply respect.

The first Indian car which received International recognition. Kudos to Tata to think this up despite all their limitations!

Knew this was sure to happen.(good(most imp)car and brought India onto the automotive world map)
if not for the nano, i believe ritz might have creamed the competition

A truly deserving winner. The car has revolutionised the small car market and has made the world take notice.

All credit to Mr Ratan Tata who despite so many hurdles delivered on his promise.

A car without passenger side mirror even as an extra fitting, winning car of the year award??? What a shame!!!!

The engine when raised, sounds like a vacuum cleaner and behaves like one in hilly/ghat areas.

ICOTY award,

Of course no one will object that. Tata Nano is the only one to acquire the award in this category. But other competitors are put in the same group is not wise man's act.

well why am i not surprised?
the car of the year is always the most popular car during the year.
No other car had the hype that the nano had . Maybe the fortuner did but not to the masses where affordability was the issue.
We did it deserve it well Maybe, depends on what your definition of a car is.

The ability to dream come true.

I don't understand if I should praise nano here, especially after reading varun roy's case. I have also heard about many quality issues with nano too.

The problem here is that people do not buy things for the expected usage or else expect far higher than what it is intended for. Nano is meant to be a car for those who endanger the life of their families by hanging on to a 2-wheeler precariously (Mostly the couple with 2 small kids).

Nano aims to provide them a respectable and safe mode of commutation at a very affordable cost. Period. And has Nano achieved that? Although a long term report on this car will give a better picture from the signs of it till now it has done so very well.

You can not buy this car and then expect everything that other cars provide. Nano sells with the clear instructions that the ideal speed for this car is between 60 and 80. Above that the bearings will wear off very fast. The underlining point here is the recommended speed. You can not try and rev the motor skyhigh and then say it sounds like a vaccumm cleaner. The same holds true if you try and compare it with a M800 which even in its most basic form costs 2Lakhs at the least.

So please do keep the perspective in line before you air your expectations or rancour with this car.

P.S.: Just so that it gets all its due credits, I must also mention here that one of the Nanos from this forum recently covered the entire Mumbai-New Delhi stretch within a record 32+ hours (a little bit here and there maybe). It never experienced any hiccups and the two occupants who are seasoned auto buffs and drive cars like the RS were absolutely gaga over this tiny wonder.
