Unlike the majority i have voted for the Tata Manza. This car has really impressed me . A great leap in quality ( which is still not top notch ) . Super Duper VFM.

oh! my, feels like you are asking me to select one among my best friends!
Yes, there are positives, there are negatives and there are the ones whom you have shared everything! But still if I have to chose one and it has to be the one which made me feel great and proud then it has to be Nano Thank you Mr. Tata.

My vote goes for the Nano.

All the other cars in the list can just be seen as an evolutionary change over their previous gen models. But the Tata nano has actually revolutionized the auto industry making every other car major want to have their own version of nano.

The ICOTY is a very tough choice this year. My favorite cars of 2009 were:
Fiat Linea, Chevy Cruze, and Skoda Superb.
I actually count Linea to be a 2008 contender since many auto awards also considered it in 2008.
So, I think it should be the Chevy Cruze that deserves it. GM has priced the Cruze excellently and India is only the third market to get it, before the USA.
It's got a wide range of equipment. The engine packs in a lot of punch (minus the turbo lag) and the ride is quite comfy.
The Nano is a great achievement by Tata and has created a lot of hype in foreign countries rather than India. Tata got a slightly low response here. How many Nanos did we have on Team-BHP till now? I guess just one. I respect all Nano voters. But IMO the ICOTY should be a car that is a 'no compromise car' and the Cruze quite manages that.

You are absolutely correct, Cyrus. The I20 was launched on the 26th of December, 2008. Technically, it should NOT be included in the 2009 COTY.

Removing from the list.

Well, the diesel was launched this year. Infact i20 sales started picking up after the diesel launch this year.

Nano has obviously changed the whole automobile industry so it deserves the ICOTY.

I think it would be more interesting to know the no 2. I have voted for Fortuner because IMO it has changed the game by completely altering the dynamics of 18-25L SUV segment. A long awaited vehicle delivered on high expectations (well almost, bad brakes and not AT but that's OK). I don't see any other car in the list (we are talking about no 2 so nano is not in the picture ) which has had such a big impact in the segment in which it was introduced.

Dippy,
Excellent way to start count down for year end!

Tata Nano
Why?
Revolution - This car ( and the thought behind) broke the barrier and belief that car can not be produced at 1 Lac price
Innovation - Many innovative ideas implemented ( not for rocket science ) but for bringing car price down
Indian - Everybody else put dowwn this idea( Maruti Suzuki MD suggested something in tongue in cheek when 1 Lac car was mentioned ), but an Indian company thought about, planned for and implemented a concept
Humanitarian - Only Ratan Tata could think about the need of a small Indian family. That is the real 'philanthropic' Tata for us. Yes, I know that Tata would only make this car for a profit, but imagin if Tata can pull of Nano at this cost after all investment in R&D etc, what would be the cost of cars like Maruti 800.

The list can go on, but for me nano would be Car of the year ( for couple of years at least)

WIth regards,

JLS

I agree. However, we have to stick to technicalities here. New engines cannot give a car a re-entry onto the list. For example, the Laura has had two new engines this year, but is yet missing from the list as the car is NOT a 2009 launch.

We have to stick to the 1st Jan - 31st Dec time frame. Of course, the launch we will count is the launch + price release (and not merely a product unveiling).

I voted for Tata Nano, Its the most revolutionary automobile after Maruti 800.

Even Superb, Punto and Fortuner are very good cars, If Nano was not in the poll i would have voted for Superb.

Nano deserves a place of its own for being a marvel- somehow I cannot weigh it in the same scale as other cars.
Now that the i20 is out - it has to be the fortuner which gets my vote.

My vote goes to no no, no other car but Nano. Mr. Ratan Tata has delivered when once seemed to be an impossible task to achieve. Hats off to him.
