Today in Times of India, Zigwheels has provided a First Drive report of Etios Sedan and can be found here: Toyota-Etios-Road-Test,Buy New Cars, Used Cars, Auto News and Reviews India - Zigwheels.com

From what I read in this report, one can only surmise that Toyota seems to be hitting that sweet spot what with some reports here suggesting that the price is going to be competitive.

For ready reference, providing some excerpts of the review below (Mods, if this is not allowed, please delete this part).

"In fact, having driven from Bidadi to Pune, our road test chief Dilip Desai said that he stepped out fresh as a daisy clearly highlighting the fatigue-free nature of the driving position and the easy power delivery. Suspension components front to rear are made up of MacPherson struts on the front end with a torsion beam axle doing duty at the rear. The ride quality is of a very comfortable order but this doesn't come at the cost of insipid handling. Keeping in mind this is an all round family car, the Etios comes across with straight forward and safe dynamics. The wide track and the long wheelbase help with good vehicle stability. The electrically-assisted power steering is light and slightly devoid of feel at lower reaches of its operating spectrum but it is precise and spot-on, not overtly quick or unduly slow in response.

The top end Etios sedan comes with 185/60 R15 size Bridgestone Turanza rubber shod on alloy rims while other variants make do with 175/65R14 tyres. Overall drive dynamics and vehicle behaviour are neutral which are big feel good factors for this category of car and what is impressive is that given the light build of the vehicle, this doesn't come at the cost of stability or structural integrity. Braking is another strong trait of the Etios, the ventilated front discs and rear drums combo delivering effortless retardation every time without unsettling the car in the least. The Etios further comes with ABS and EBD which is a good sign as this will deliver added impetus across this segment of car to up the ante on the safety aspect.

SUMMING IT UP: Stonking value delivered!

Designing and making a car to a price which will target it straight at the Swift D'Zire's jugular is one thing, making it with legendary Toyota build and quality is another but the Etios should satisfy on both points. Two small details illustrate how the Tata Nano's clever solutions to enhancing structural rigidity and reducing costs with fewer components bears reference here. The roof panel of the Etios feature the structural ribs stamped in at the sheet metal pressing stage. The use a single large wiper with a broad sweep for the front windscreen is another. Both do their job as intended. Detail touches which are not exactly rocket-science but clever in their implementation. The Etios is well equipped and the top end version gets airbags for driver and front seat passenger, ABS with EBD, an engine immobilizer, door ajar warning and a built-in 2-DIN radio cum CD-player.

Looks like a lot of positive vibes out of test drives. just got a tweet from Sirish of overdrive.

"Drove Etios in pune, feels significantly better than initial drive in japan suggested. Sprightly & torquey engine. comfy. V nice!"

This is what he has to say - So the game is ON !

The Pic of the Etios from Timesofiindia looks alright. The biggish tail lamp is still standing out.

They seem to have got the engine spot on with decent mileage and good drivability characteristics.

A week or so before we know the pricing.

Since Etios is manufactured in Karnataka, would that mean that the Bangalore On road prices would be slightly less compared to other cars like Fiat, VW,Maruti etc. Road taxes are the maximum I know in Bangalore but the transportation charges might workout less.

thanks for posting the link. Looks like Toyota will be doing an NHC with Etios sedan, and with the decent engine, badge and FE, people are going to love it. If they price it well, it can really impact the current sub 8L sedan king, DeZire.

Waiting for TBHP review!

Waiting for the prices - Cmon guys, de-throne Dzire and become the new king in the class. Give us a rattle free cars and force others to learn from you!

The most amazing thing in the whole review is that the sedan version weighs in at 900 kg for low-end and 930 kg for fully loaded model.

thats amazing, this is one of the lightest sedans and the power is adequate, the fuel efficiency will be even better.

Cost cutting is evident with the single wiper, integrated head rests, centre-mounted console (given that this model might be exported to LHD countries). But I believe that quality won't be compromised and Toyota won't shortchange us on this count.

this car looks as out of proportion as dzire and most probably will share the same fate...of being a segment leader.

Keeping the dated looks and funny interiors aside, i feel this is a very well done video. It explains the features of the car clearly and gives confidence in the product quality.

But i still can't get why the car keeps smiling when seen from front. Didn't they find it out of place?

While reading the Zigwheels test drive report, i came across this...

"Another detail which I did find disconcerting, especially when I drove the car on the rain drenched Fuji Speedway handling course was the underbody noise insulation. The wheel wells up front have no cladding as seen on other cars and maybe this is responsible for the unfavourable noise emanating from below as the water hits the underbody. Mind you noise levels within the cabin are unbelievably low and it is only the water hitting the underbody which detracts somewhat from a fine drive experience."

Does it mean that there are no plastic claddings inside the wheel wells? Something similar to the Ambassador?

The teaser video is very good. The vertical aircon vents in the centre is very odd. Even in the video, the air flow is skewed.

It looks better than only Logan and Dzire ( not Manza ). But the vertical aircon vents look ugly and so do the pull type door handles which are not flush fitting and stick out like sore thumb, like in Ikon and Indica.
