VW at the Auto Expo 2010

Say hello to the VW Polo! Phenomenal looks, expectedly rich ride & handling, good build and fit / finish. My only doubts lie around that 1.2 liter 3 cylinder Fabia petrol engine. In the Polo, it makes 75 BHP. Is it enough? Will the refinement match the 4 cylinders, or of the class topper (Ritz 1.2 L K series petrol). A diesel 1.2 liter is expected to be launched in June. Move over, Fabia. Your time has come. And gone.

The silver car seems to be the top end. It even had reach / rake adjust steering and curtains for the rear windows!

Highlights of the Polo:
  • 1.2 litre petrol 75 BHP @5400 rpm and torque 110 Nm @ 3750 rpm.
  • 1.2 litre diesel 75 BHP @4200 rpm and torque 180 Nm @2000 rpm.
  • 5 Speed Manual Transmission.
  • Three variants: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline
  • Body coloured bumpers with green tinted heat absorbing glass, halogen headlights and galvanized Body with 6 years Anti Corrosion Warranty.
  • Power steering, central locking with unique boot opener in company logo, height adjustable driving seats, tilt steering wheel, CD MP3 Player changer with 4 speakers.
  • Storage compartment in front doors for 1 litre Bottles, sunglass storage inside glove box, single folding rear seat backrest.
  • Dual airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and electronic Anti theft immobilizer.
  • Polo Highline comes with 15" alloy wheels.
My kind of design. Clean and proportionate. Absolutely no quirkiness:

Nice interiors. Notice Swift-like steering:

Big glovebox:

That's the best gearshift of any small car. Or sub-10 lakh sedan. The shift quality was unreal smooth:

Respectable boot size:

Rear legroom seemed to be strictly average. Conservative rather than spacious:

I have a feeling this car is going to beg for a bigger engine. Heck, look at that engine bay. It looks rather empty, no?

The Polo Cup edition. This is the track-tune Polo that will be used in the Polo Cup race series. Competition races will start in June 2010, presumably in South India. Power comes from a 1.6 Liter DIESEL (yup, its an oilburner) engine. Rehaan asked the VW guy chances of this engine being offered in the regular Polo? Fat chance! What we wouldn't give to drive the Polo Cup. Don't overlook the JK Tyre Slicks!

Highlights of the Polo Cup Edition:
  • 1.6L R4 common rail diesel engine, 130 BHP @ 4400 rpm and torque 250 Nm@ 1500-2500 rpm.
  • 6 speed manual gearbox.
  • Adjustable Sachs race suspension, aerodynamic body kit with front and rear spoiler, side skirts and rear wing.
  • Interior equipped with integrated head protection in the race seat, a 6 point seatbelt prepared for HANS System, safety net on driver side, additional display and data logger system with on board camera.
  • Safety and security: Provision of FIA approved roll cage, fire extinguisher system with internal and external release, electrical cut off system and a race brake system with four piston fixed caliper and ventilated 312 mm disk front and 232 mm disc brake rear.
  • 17 inch alloy wheels with 200/605 R17 slick tyres.

The rest of the VW stall. The Polo was undoubtedly one of the show stoppers of the Auto Expo, and of the VW stall. Nothing else besides at VW. The ambience was like that of a German surgical clinic. White......VW logos were the only part that broke the colour, subtle sound and very serious ambience.

Another launch was the Phaeton. VW plans to price it at 75 lakhs. With handcrafted interiors, limited numbers will be brought into India and it will compete with the 7 series, S Class, and even the 90L(Ex showroom Delhi) Jaguar XJ.

Pardon me if i am wrong, it may be my overactive imagination but the design of the car in the second and third pic reminds me of Palio.
But overall the design is simple and laid back. Lets see how it behaves with 1.2L engine.

Thanks for posting the pics sir.

The Polo Cup version is Hot! Weight reduction, roll cage, slick tyres and killer looks. Hope VW sells a race package separately for the needed ones

Wow. The Silver car had the 1.2L petrol?
The brochure specs in the other thread indicates that the comfortline would have 15" alloys/rubber. Guess that would be what's on the red car?

The 17"ers on the silver car would surely be optional. Or would they release this trim with the 1.6l / 105bhp engine !!?

GTO thanks for the close-up pictures.
Hats off to you on posting these high quality pictures. It feels as though you have personally opened the engine bay.

If possible can you post more interior pictures and specification of Polo Cup?

Hi Auto Lovers,

It seems to be a great car of the year. In comparison with Toyota Etios, it is for ahead. VW really keep up its name as well as the brand reputation.
