Mercedes Benz at the Auto Expo 2010

When you are in the presence of a car that churns out 563 BHP and 650 NM of torque, you can't help but feel overwhelmed.

Here it is : The Mercedes SLS AMG

Exterior:

The SLS "AMG Gold Edition" which is on display at the show comes with matt gold finish on the aluminium body together with striking highlights in high-gloss black which makes for an extraordinary and highly attractive combination. With its matt silk surface, "AMG Desert Gold" further accentuates the sporty appearance of the Gullwing model. All the decorative and mounted features that are in shining chrome or Silver Shadow in the standard SLS AMG have been given a deep-black paint finish by AMG's designers. Be it the Mercedes star and the trim strip on the cross fin at the front, the fins on the bonnet and flanks, the filler cap or all the model plates. High-gloss black is used everywhere, ensuring a striking contrast with the matt silk sheen of the gold paintwork. The black-painted AMG light-alloy wheels in size 9.5 x 19 at the front and 11.0 x 20 at the rear are embellished with a golden ring on the rim flange. The long hood is made of high quality carbon fibre.

Interior:

The interior of the special SLS AMG model is in sporty black, has sports bucket seats corresponding with the solid carbon-fibre centre console and other carbon-fibre interior features.

It needs the long hood. 6.2 L V8 torque monster:

Brake discs that are nearly as large as the wheels! And, beat this, the wheel wells are felt-lined:

It was raining AMGs at the Benz showcase. What a breath of fresh air amidst the "green" (actual as well as marketing gibberish) theme of some others:

Sure, you had the CLS 63....

But the SL 63 Black was simply stunning!

This is Merc's bread and butter engine. In its latest form, the 2.2 liter 4th gen common-rail diesel (with blue efficiency nomenclature) pumps out 203 BHP and 500 NM of torque @ 1,600 rpms!

Expect it to come our way real soon:

Two new variants were launched; the C250 and the S500.

The C250 makes 204 BHP & 246 NM of torque (2,900 - 5,500 rpm) from a 2.5 L V6 engine:

The S500 is now 10+ lakhs cheaper:

The Concept Fascination:

Mercedes displayed its unique version of its E Coupe at the Expo called the Concept Fascination.

Exterior:
  • The Fascination's elongated body is dominated by the dynamic front-to-rear sweep of its lines which gives it a dynamically charged look, evoking movement even when the vehicle is stationary.
  • Frameless, side-window line like a continuous arc from front to rear, uninterrupted by a B-pillar.
  • The front of the Fascination is the same like the normal E Class but interprets it in a more contemporary way. The headlamps are set against a grey background reveal the fascinating technical details of the light units which feature the latest LED technology as well as C-shaped fibre-optic inserts which serve as discreet running lights.
  • The forward-sloping rear also has a pronounced V-shape and features a spoiler, below which the third brake light is reflected in the rear window. Flat, horizontal LED lights extend around the back, linking it visually with the sides.
  • A large panoramic glass roof and the arc brings a sense of visual lightness to the interior.
  • The floor of the load compartment, which measures approximately one metre square, is made of wood with brushed aluminium protective rails. Folding up the floor at the left and right sides reveals two compartments containing two sets of binoculars as well as a high-quality digital camera with interchangeable Leica lenses.
  • The centre of the load compartment is occupied by a folding smoked glass table which rises out of the floor at the touch of a button to reveal a compartment housing a humidor. The table can also be pulled to the rear for easier access from outside. Doing so provides access to a refrigerated compartment for drinks and champagne flutes. The smoked glass can then be folded up at left and right.

Interiors:
  • The interiors comprise of high quality materials, such as leather, wood and aluminium, as well as high-quality woven fabrics and many carefully crafted details add to the sporty and stylish character of the Concept Fascination.
  • Dark leather covers the aluminium centre console which, like a bridge extending from the front to the rear, spans the space between the four sporty individual seats and translates the taut lines of the exterior to the interior of the vehicle with minimalist elements. Strong and natural, this leather also covers the upper section of the dashboard as well as enhancing the look and feel of the door armrests.
  • nubuck leather is used for the four individual seats and other surfaces the deep-pile carpet with heavy fibres adds to the contrast of the interior. The seat centre panels are covered in strong, high-quality fabric. Trim strips in American walnut with a fine chrome surround add to the list of high quality materials used.
  • The characteristic V-shape of the exterior extends to the dashboard whose styling evokes a dynamic wing and which features an instrument cluster with five tubes and silver dials.

nice shots GTO. It's nice to see merc's showcasing their AMG's more rather than go GREEN stuff, which seems to be followed by other's.

i would have preferred SLS in different color, none the less it's an amazing piece of machinery

This is what I was waiting for. Amazing pictures GTO. The SLS is nothing short of an object of lust. I'm speechless. Nice to see Benz going full out at the show. I also love the E Wagon. I somehow find it better looking than the saloon. Is it a two door version?

Some pictures of the GL would be nice. The SL63 seems to be the same one I drove in Pune

wow! The Desert Gold SLS AMG looks fantastic!! I guess it's the same car that was showcased at the Dubai Auto Show few days back.
Wasn't the E class coupe supposed to be unveiled at the auto expo?

Hey GTO , great Pics.

Got a question , why is ths steering wheel not Oval as in other cars on the SLS , it has like a straight line at the bottom of the Oval.

Does this mean that the turning radius of the car is that amazing that they dont need an entire 'round' ?

Its one of those silly things which became cool overnight. Its inspiration is racing steering wheels which are so designed especially on tract racing.

A flat bottomed steering wheel is a standard feature on performance cars (AMG models, ///M cars, Audi RS models, VW GTI etc). It increases the clearance between the wheel and your thighs. But yes, it's not exactly necessary on road cars.
